Adam's an old friend as well as one of the most respected techno producers to come out in the past 5 years. I don't know what he may have said in the past & am by no means endorsing his opinions(he used to irk me at times, too), but he's definitely a legend in more than just his own mind by this point.diverdee wrote:Hmmm AdamJay, if it's the same guy he can be an opinionated prick over at the ableton live forums also - legend in his own mind.

Agreed. Somebody mentioned aliasing early, that sounded about right to me. I only like the filter at the lower resonance settings, although something right between medium & high would be good.soundpalace wrote:However, the thing I hate most about this filter, is when using it with the highest 2 resonance values, and sweeping the cutoff frequency, there are some frequencies which sound EXTREMELY nasty, sounds like digital clipping is occuring, and at other frequencies it sounds ok.
Sort of agreed on this one. Putting it against the UAD-1 Cambridge filters (of which there are three different varieties at 6-36db slopes), it seems to cut off the same frequencies but sounds more smooth doing it. I'd be curious to hear the Sonalksis up against the Waves Linear Phase EQ, has anyone gotten a chance to do that yet? Also, even at the steepest slope, it doesn't quite sound that steep, running a 24 db/oct filter should be pretty harsh, 48 should be brutal, but it just isn't with this filter ... which makes it even more confusing.

Cool, I understand he can be extremely helpful over at the abe's forum also, aranging the performance tests etc.Uncle E wrote: Adam's an old friend as well as one of the most respected techno producers to come out in the past 5 years. That particular comment he made & a few others made me kind of sus, I may have got him all wrong in which case I apologise unreservedly.
doesn't matter who you are or what you've done, it's how you conduct yourself that counts (IMO).
I've known & met plenty of 'famous' people, some were cool, some were pricks - they're human like anyone else, being talented or succesful in one particular sphere or activity may gives ones opinion some more weight in that particular sphere, no more than that - but his blanket generalisation regarding this particular forum was uncalled for & smelt somewhat like sour grapes to me.

Absolutely! Even towards a friend, if the shoe fits...I was mainly just defending him against the "legend in his own mind" comment.diverdee wrote:his blanket generalisation regarding this particular forum was uncalled for & smelt somewhat like sour grapes to me.

Actually, it's pretty easy to separate people from their money if they think a plug-in is automatically good on the basis of the name on the gui rather than how it sounds. These prices are invented pretty much out of thin air combined with a glance around the business to see what others are charging for supposedly comparable plugs. There's no cost accounting involved. From the comments here, though, they may have miscalculated their perceived value of the filter to potential customers despite the brand name on it.alexibm wrote:I mean come on, Sonalksis is not that stupid to make something for 200, and it was not first worth the price, and second was not doing someting that it is intendet to do normally.
All their plug-ins are among the best on the market

It's not easy to judge a price when the same self appointed golden eared brigade who are slagging this off consider $1000 good vfm on a tone control.eduardo_b wrote:Actually, it's pretty easy to separate people from their money if they think a plug-in is automatically good on the basis of the name on the gui rather than how it sounds. It's a well-proven rule in marketing that if you overprice something enough, its perceived value and desirability increases significantly in the eyes of the target market. In other words, it's so much more expensive than anything else that some believe it simply must be that much better. Why else would anyone be willing to pay a thousand dollars for an effect that is maybe worth a tenth of that.nuffink wrote:It's not easy to judge a price when the same self appointed golden eared brigade who are slagging this off consider $1000 good vfm on a tone control.

They're here to warn us. This plugin obviously set their sirens wailing. Which are inaudible to us plebs.nuffink wrote:self appointed golden eared brigade who are slagging this off consider $1000 good vfm on a tone control.

It's also true that if something is too expensive, most people won't ever get a chance to find out how it compares to other things in the first place. We all have the oppurtunity to try out the Sonalksis but I wouldn't be surprised if many don't, simply because of the price & limited feature set. Why bother trying something if you know you're never going to buy it anyway, right? Personally, I really like the Sonalksis but I'm not willing to pay $200 for it, which really is the worst of all possible scenarios.eduardo_b wrote:It's a well-proven rule in marketing that if you overprice something enough, its perceived value and desirability increases significantly in the eyes of the target market. I can't speak for the $1000, as from my view that's crazy no matter how good it is, but for a $20 donation, the 3-band was pretty good value for money.nuffink wrote:It's not easy to judge a price when the same self appointed golden eared brigade who are slagging this off consider $1000 good vfm on a tone control.

And yet another thread where nuffink gets a reason to bitch and moan. Still a bit long in the tooth after the PLParEQ scepsis, eh?

Awww, bitterness
I for one wonder which discussion he has to win in order to finally get over it.
FWIW, TBK isn't that thrilling. Especially for the price.
More ammo to the anti-"self appointed golden eared brigade" people?
