Hello,

What do you all use to fast audition, rendering or editing general midi files.

Do you bump up your DAW and VSTi or do you have some little handy tools for it.

I'm using Windows XPs internal synth for anything I want to listen to very quickly. Running it through WinAmp. Alternatively I still have my rusty SoundCanvas connected.
And for easy, good sounding renderings I'm using NIs Bandstand.

For editing I'm using a sequencer, of course.

Yes,

Do those both use the windows wavetable synth as rendering engine?
I'm looking to some "free" alternatives.
I know NI has the new bandstand but it is a bit expensive and to big.
I have the Roland VSC version 3.

Does something exists between those 4MB progz and the full multi MB sample players.

I do occasionally use some GM soundfonts, but usually I just switch my Soundcanvas or QY-70 on, should I need true GM/GS/XG compatibility.

I have both and Hyper Canvas is marginally better, but neither are as good as my SC-88 Sound Canvas hardware module.

WMP for a quick listen, Quartz Audimaster for editing or rendering a single track, Orion for anything else.

Hello,

I bump on GM files almost daily as a teacher.
(web, Biab, Finale, etc.)
I hate it to fire up my daw and heavy sample libs for a simple midi file.
On the other hand working with winamp alike tools does not allow editing or rendering.
Until now the best I could find is Finale with its buildin Softsampler.
Or any daw with microsoft wavetable synth or Roland VSC.

Well, isn't VSC doing the job just fine then?
Sure, there's better sounds around, but I allways found a SoundCanvas to be moderately well sounding, especially as the sounds blend together quite well.

Yes it is.
I just was looking for a better sounding fast module.
I seems like there is nothing better between VSC and something like NI bandstand.
Strange.
