ok, i've listened to a little. it makes me think of speed racer, transformers, and pokemon. do you dance to this music? do you do a fast "robot"? do you run to the rescue?

there seems to be some hard rules in this genre. the songs i heard all sounded very similar. they were also repetitive and simple

well, seems dnb isn't something i'm wired for

^^pretty muched summed it up. Dancing is kinda like moshing without the violence or homosexuality, except for the black hoody folk who who stare at the floor.

scotchlandia. generally in the clubs I've been to people are either dancing, watching people dance whilst having a breather, drinking at the bar, sitting down chatting, snogging, fighting. No floor staring at dnb nights here, and I think if you wore a hoody hood-up you'd get thrown out

Damn right you would, which is a shame since it's mostly the metal/indie/student types and not chavs that wear them on a night out (in glasgow atleast.) Maybe if they threw you out for wearing clothes from H&M.............

heheh.. gotta say, dnb has got to be my favorite genre to dance to! I flat out go ballistic. As a matter of fact... quite a few years ago, when I was listening to dnb the most... I used make sure I'd hit a dnb spot the night after a stressful day at work in order to release all that pent up frustration. When it was time to leave... soaked from head to toe.. the feeling afterwards is somewhat cathartic. The additional bonus is that you don't have any idiots waving glowsticks in your face trying to get you to massage their shoulders... there is no room for that nonsense... no room to puddle on the floor cos you'd get smashed. Just vibe off the intensity, bounce around like molecules being brought to high temps.. ahhh the memories... so many different styles, and places it can take you... tho for me, in terms of dancing... the darker, the harder, the more f**ked up.. the better! tho I gotta say I love the ragga biz too!

i've actually always thought dnb/hardhouse tries too hard, much like trance to fit a specific feeling. the result is, the music usually has no feeling at all. i dont understand how trance and dnb have managed to get into cookie-cutter mode so much these years..

as for dnb.. i actually never got the names of any of those.

dnb doesnt even sound like dnb anymore :/
trance likewise..

remembered a bit; i think a friend gave me a copy of trance nation 11 (i think).. but that would have been in 96.. while this was published in 97? .. hm.

anyway, most of the trance and dnb was a lot better only ten years ago.. i dont know what happened.. probably the ease of sequencing and production via PCs ruined the whole tape multitrack process :(

Agreed. If you don't know Bong-Ra, Panacea or the Position Chrome label, you don't know anything about hard.

aciddose.. imo the beauty of dnb is that is has a very wide range of sound and style. LTJ's music has feelings that are totally removed from Stakka&Skynet... they sound nothing alike. I would agree tho, that many of the folks producing it have a tendency to stick to whatever the flavor of the month is... that generates this cookie cutter syndrome. Regardless, the music has been wide and extremely varried over the years.. probably much more so than any other dj oriented electronic music genre out there.

Reverse Engineer... Low Profile Darkness is my favorite Panacea release.. ya know, before he got all slim and fit. I dig the early No-U-Turn stuff too... think Torque--Ed Rush, Optical, Trace and Nico... tho that's not really dancey, it's more sparse and dark... kinda proto-techstep before it got super dark (which I love too!) in the late '90s.

Yeah... people keep trying to explain to me that to dance to drum and bass without going mental and looking like a twat you dance at half speed to the basslines. They don't seem to have realised that going mental and looking like a twat is half the fun for me. Still haven't got the hang of the 'walking in treacle' dance, though.

Actually, one of the funnier things I've seen in a club is a bunch of students whose normal music choice was drum and bass having dub played at them. They heard the slow sub basslines, and sort of mentally filled in the double speed breaks and then went mental to them. Very odd.

hehe, that happens to me with some ambientish music, where in my mind there are aphex-like glitches and fast beats all over the place. in fact it's sometimes more fun when there's only lush melodies to go totally nuts..
