The thing that has always astonished me is how resolutely audio developers don't take any lead in keeping some kind, any kind, of a vestment of an interest in keeping the musical supply chain open. Except of course for Apple.

Forgive my ignorance: Is it that expensive to keep a site running?
I ask this as I was under (the illusion?) that buying web space in itself was not particularly expensive, I am sure there are other costs that I am oblivious of.

Time is one thing. Buying hosted space isn't too much of a problem, even getting ecommerce stuff.
It's the maintenance, and ensuring that you attract new business. In some lines of business, if you don't keep the homepage ticking over, you'll lose the interest of the passersby. Same as high street retailers.
If you buy a proper online, database driven content management system, then that costs, but the overall content maintenance is much less. Failing that you can do it all by hand - takes ages!
In between is something like CityDesk by FogCreek, in which you store everything, like an online CMS, but rather it being online, you compile a new site, and upload it. It's a decent halfway house between static and dynamic site management.
It is a shame that another bastien of the arts has fallen.

Bandwidth costs money. Most of the cheaper hosting places put limits on how much you can transfer. Other places charge you depending on what your peak bandwidth is. I'm sure a site like ampcast that has people downloading and streaming music takes a considerable chunk of bandwidth and thus money.

I've never tried deep linking, but I can see no reason why it wouldn't work. Erm...

The web page I use is not a template but a collage of artwork from the album. The listing portion of the web page is pretty much a fixture which can be colorized any which way you like. Between that and the top of page is an area into which you can insert pretty any much html you like, within the user agreement on decency etc., hosted from anywhere else other than AMPCAST.
AMPCAST is cool. Pricey, but cool. The main idea of the business model is that they get a profit take on any CDs they make and ship for you. Guess CD sales aren't making it.
