HI

Gave this a try today but on setting it up to use ASIO I just lost all sound?

Any issues with this and ASIO.

I actually like the retro look of this and want to give it a go.

no issues here with asio. Have tried mailing the author about this? He's usually very responsive and helpful with probs.

I only use it with ASIO. MAudio Delta44, 256 samples@88.200 Hz, no problems.

I assume you have clicked the "sound on" and "midi on" icons in the toolbar (easily done - I made that mistake when I first got it)

What makes it different to other host programs - I like the retro look!

All kinds of stuff. Usually the more experimental stuff- glitch, ambient, the more left field hip hop or house/techno, IDM, academic electro acoustic stuff, noise, and so on.
There's a discography on the site, that should give you an idea.
I use it for the stuff you can hear here.

What makes it different to other host programs - I like the retro look!

I think the look will change when Ross switches to Qt.
Then again, maybe not.

I use Mulch on everything I do these days. I guess it could best be described as a sequenced audio processor. I often make several sound set-ups as I'm writing, I'll record each set-up as I go, and then combine, mix and alter the recorded sounds in a master file. Or I'll just set some stuff up, hit record and start playing, since it's designed with live use in mind.

I don't know if any other host approaches automation in quite the same way, so it's different in that regard. It is also as much a synth and a sampler as it is host/sequencer.

One of the things it brings to the table is the metasurface. I haven't used it much yet, but it essentially works like plugins with preset morph, except it allows you to shift through full host states, which can be a pretty impressive composition tool on elaborate patches. It's also great just for finding the settings you want on a module, since you could easily setup two extra patches and shift in between them until you hit the right sound.

Working with Mulch is a very different process from working with a MIDI sequencer, since you approach sound rarely as writing notes but rather triggering and shifting chunks and streams of sound. Sounds flaky, but it is the only way I can describe it.

Theses days I use it mainly has a big synth that where I use simple generator or effects that I patch together to make a big one. It really forces me to be creative has far has coming up with new sounds with little. I also use it has an effect processor with live instruments.

It's great for live use. If you have a chance, you should read through the manual entirely has it shows some things which aren't obvious on the outside.
