The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Apparently they didn't update anything yet...so it will probably be Tuesday, unless they work Saturday Christmas Eve...
Our account is set up already. I entered in the description, the tracklist, and contact info. Now all we are waiting for is them to digitize it (scan the album cover and rip the songs) and waive our setup fee (which I'm having problems with as they are telling me that the setup fee is never waived--even though they told me it would be waived--twice). No worries though, I'll get them to waive it. I wish I had it in writing, but it was a verbal agreement. I'm also trying to get them to mail our checks directly to the charities so we won't have to deal with it. ;)

One of the really cool things about cdbaby is that they will become our online distributor for free. That means we will be for sale at such sites as iTunes, Rhapsody, and Napster!! CDbaby takes a 9% cut and the charities get the rest. :)

Another thing to mention is that, by default, they record the first 2 minutes of each track for online song samples. Of course there are two theories regarding this. The first states that the more available the material is, the better chance a potential buyer will be enticed. The second theory employs the tactics of concealed enticement; Thus, allowing the potential buyer to hear snippets of some of the stronger tracks and leading them to buy the cd to hear the other tracks (kind of like the idea behind singles).

So any opinions will be interesting to hear...

Lazy shiftless trollops! I've had to work MANY holiday evenings for the sake of the almighty corporate buck! What's wrong with peeps these days?!?! :hihi:

Hehe.. Well, some of the tracks are only 2 minutes long in total, so that might not work too well if *every* song has a two-minute sample

Can't they do one minute samples?

Post

Well, I agree about the 2 minute or less songs...;)
Unfortunately, it looks like they have their protocol of 2 minutes and they also say that once the songs are chosen it is VERY difficult for them to go back and make changes so they urge you to make absolutely sure of your choices and stick with them. Why it is so hard, I don't know.

So we take out the songs that are 2 minutes or less...what about the others?
Would it be good to use only half the songs?

Prolly select ten songs  I reckon that's more than enough to get a taste of the diversity and range of the work. ;)

I wish xravenx's song was on the disc. Of the preview collage track on the www.katrinareliefcd.com site - it was my favorite.

freeztar,

If you go with choosing just 10 tracks for preview, you'll have to make the call if there are just 10 tracks selected - I don't believe any of us have access to tracks other than our own.

However, if you go with previewing all tracks - then it seems like we can go live immediately without the time it would take to select 1/4 of the songs.

My guess: Previewing all tracks on the site would make it easier to market to friends and family since we can point them to the site and tell them which track number is ours. I believe these are still our main customers.

Previewing just 10 tracks would make it easier to market to non-family, non-friends - the public in general.

I still plan on making copies of the disc for promotional purposes at radio stations in the area, so either way works for me.

so is mine!

I guess they've come up with the 2 minute preview thing due to some sort of marketing tests/polls they've done. Seems a bit longish to me, though they're the experts and it's in their best interests to market and sell as much as possible.

But it's the same for Freezey and I -- our song is barely 2:00 in length.

This is kind of cool though from the CDBaby site:

"Every album in CD Baby is automatically listed on Tower Records' website, though the sales, shipping, and payment are done through CD Baby...."

;)

Ok, here's what I've come up with...perhaps those of you who've heard all the tracks (xander, You, xRAVENx, Emdot) can comment on the list. I tried to choose a sampling that reflected the great diversity on the albums.

1. Van Greco - Alternative Rock
2. Rockstar_not - Piano Ballad (folk)
3. Emdot_ambient - Ambient
4. Bluedad - Pop
5. Mistral - Electronica (almost triphop-ish and the only trak with female vocals)
6. AllenpOet - Hip Hop
7. T-willy - Hard/Heavy Rock
8. IIRs - DnB
9. Herodotus - Blues
10. Glooper - Rock

I wouldn't mind adding another electronica and ambient track as they represent the majority styles.

Keith --the list looks fine to me mate. Also, if you want to add another two or even five to ballance out the various genres, I reckon that's fine by me as well. ;)

Cheers & Merry Christmas,
Alex

Merry Christmas everyone. If that means nothing to you, then please have a good day regardless.
