Post

We've just released version 0.91 of the Rhino public beta. Here is a list of changes since 0.91:
- fixed bugs, slowdown's and crashes (I hope)
- add waveform displayer on the osc pages
- add osc mute (click on the waveform displayer)
- uses Windows standard menus (they don't look as nice as the ones of the previous version, but at least they don't flicker, and they're easier to use)
- reduced GDI resource usage
- add LED display on the top tabs to indicate which oscillators are in use
- add snap in envelope sync mode
- add copy of envelopes (using right-click menu in the envelope display)
- added a few more internal waveforms

Please post suggestions and bug reports here.

Hi 'Tick, just spent 30 mins or so with 0.91 and the only thing I've noticed so far is that on Osc 1 and 2, more that one of the waveforms is ticked in the menus.

Seems much more stable than 0.90 and also looks like it uses a little less CPU! :D 8)

This is turning into a must buy. (Ummm. Hopefully you're not planning to charge like $300 US for it .... are you? :P )

In about an hour I had it denorm on me once and only once. I have no idea what triggered it but it was within the first five minutes with nothing else loaded. Otherwise I have been running it in Sonar II with DirectiXer and chaining effects like Ohmboyz on it with no problems.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

Rabid,

Nah, it's gonna be around the EUR 100 bar.
I've fixed another small denorm problem in my new version, hopefully this is the one :)

We're mainly working on the presets now....

Cheers,

Strange ... Rhino reminds me of an another product ...

But " it " seems to be stuck at version 1.1 for some time, a very good product and why enhance it : their forum is quiet ( not like their others !! ) everybody is relatively happy ! well I'am not and I hope, you'll go further !!!!!! :D 8)

Sooo ......

I would like, I would pay for ... etc

Envelopes superposition like Angelina : 2 X 3 = 6 osc ; if 6 envelopes with different colors could be stuffed in one window, I'am okay !!

Why " add point " for level envelopes ?

Could you make double click to fit envelope on screen instead of rescaling ?

The superposition works also for keyboard tracking, waveshaping ... 2 filters in one window ...

Could you make for each osc : 1 LFO pitch ( done ), 1 LFO amplitude, 1 envelope pitch ?? :scared:

BTW, the LFOs ... where are the rate, waveshape ?

Concerning the VEL / AFT , could you make some small color related LEDs indicating that the scaling is not " neutral "

You see, in an another soft ( Absynth ) I have to look everywhere to note who are " on " it's a waste of time !!!

The waveshaper ... I've heard nastier beasts ... ( Absynth again ) whatever I do, it's still listenable, there's a problem !!

If you could stuff the maximum of infos and controls ( even only the coarse ones and regroup the fine ones elsewhere ) in the smallest place, you could charge me a Special Edition for a real lazy bugger !!! :D :D

I praise you for the fact that the matrix is always visible, not like the " other one " but I prefer theirs !

On a dark side, I have lots of bugs ... with few tweaking --> glitches, stutter, noise bursts or no sound...

I'am on XP service pack 1, SX 1.05, Pulsar II with SFP 3.1c ( latest drivers )

If you want more, don't hesitate !!

Hi PP,

I'm not too fond of having several envelopes on the same window. It's quickly gets very hard to read them.

The release version has a copy/paste envelope function that makes it very easy to move envs around oscillators, if that's what you want.

Double-click for fitting env... yeah, good idea.
You already have a pitch envelope per oscillator (there is a drop-down menu to the upper left of the envelope window - and also of all other windows, like keyboard tracking or vel/aft tracking).

Are you sure you're enabling the waveshaper ? (small button near the waveshaper window) ? it gets nasty very (too) quickly...

Most of the bugs you've listed should be fixed now, I hope.

With Rainbow it was so hard to add even minor enhancements, just because the user interface was so dense even in the first release... I don't want to make the same mistake again with Rhino, which is why the UI is, yeah, maybe not occupied at 100%. But this leaves some room for adding new features :)

Have fun,

Don't know if you've come across this one 'Tick...

In an Oscillator Envelope, enable Sync. Moving the last envelope point in the loop to the left makes it and all following envelope points jump to the far left of the envelope window.

Looking forward to the release. :D

Post

Well sure too many envelopes, that may become rapidly ...

BUT on an Excel chart, I can still say who's who !

You know I'am fed up of click - click -click sessions and then ... okay, if I remember well, osc 1 was like that, osc 2 .. I have an idea, osc 3 don't remember --> re-click ! :help:

Concerning the level envelopes : why should I " left-click " ( add point ) on certain envelopes ??

Oooops ! didn't see the drop down menu for pitch envelopes !!!

The waveshaper are enabled but they don't produce something really significant, unless I missed something else !! :clown:

Oh, an another request : could you have a " time line " that will patrol the envelope thus we could spot the areas to be reshaped, in mono of course ... :D

Post

Well, you can add points to envelopes if you think you need more. That's about it.

You can change the waveshaper envelope (in that same drop-down menu) to something flat, to hear the waveshaper working at 100%.

Time line on the env screen... I'd love to do that, but I have to check how much cpu this uses.

No, I mean on VEL/AFT ... etc, you right-click anywhere ( said left-click previously sorry ) and you've got a point, on envelopes, you've got to go through " add point " each time ... BTW more than 8 planned ?

The waveshaper works but I don't find it devastating, sometimes I couldn't tell if it's on ... :?

I was thinking ... ( oh no !!! )

On the VEL/AFT window, could you add a fader to scroll through the 8 " parameters " rapidly ?
+ a toggle button to be able to scroll all osc pitch levels for instance, if this toggle is on, the keyboard tracking will show as well the different osc settings ...
It requires a second fader on the right of the VEL/AFT window to scroll through the different osc in this mode that will show as well the related " envelopes / type / osc " combo...

Could you make level, ws, pitch visible under envelopes : there's room horizontally and it's a click saved ! maybe each envelope, one color and when you switch to an another osc you remain on pitch if you're on pitch.

Since, there's still room in the narrow band under envelopes ... :D maybe a " same size all " toggle : if you size an envelope 0 - 5 sec every other envelopes will be the same.

Maybe a sync / un-sync * all * toggle ...

The levels data on the " nodes ", IMHO you should eliminate the decimals.

I can't comment on AM1 and 2 ( amplitude modulation ? )

I just noticed the importance of the positionning on the matrix, you click on 9 of 90 : increments by 10, on 0 : by 1 ... fine !! 8)

Sorry to be annoying, but you've created a monster and it deserves the best workflow, the less clicks and less hassles as possible !!

More later, of course ... sorry !

Cool. you're going to keep me busy till Rhino 9.x ;-)
More seriously, a lot of usability changes have been done already - enough, I think, for a first release. I'll take all these comments into account for 1.1, the main goal now (and I think a lot of people will agree) is to get 1.0 released.

Thanks for the input,

It's good to take your time and do things right :)

Tick, I still haven't been able to get the newest Rhino .91 to even open on FruityLoops 3.56 without everything crashing. I'm on XP Home SP1. Athlon XP 2400, nForce2 mobo, 512MB DDR RAM, and I'm using Terratec DMX 6fire ASIO drivers.

I didn't hear back from you in mail so I figured I'll just post here.

Okay, more later ...
I hope Rhino to be a " long term " synth !!!
" I'll be back " :D

OMG!!! :o  :o :D :D :D

finally had a chance to play with the Beta.... It is sooooo easy to get amazing sounds out of this thing.... pick any preset - pick one oscilator and cycle through the wave shapes..... mind blowing.....

This is so much a must buy for me.... it's the answer to many of my prayers - anything from ambient to industrial withing a couple of clicks.... 8)

Thanks 'Tick...... 8)
