How come nobody ever mentions IR Reverbs? Isn't it essentially a Reverberation sample? I downloaded a Lexicon 91PCM IR and it sounded great, which got me thinking why there aren't more out there and what are the drawbacks to an IR over a dedicated reverb unit? How do IRs compare to the real thing?
Any info you guys could give me would be very appreciated.

I think you'll find that Convolution Reverbs & convolution in general are pretty big around here.
The coolest thing is that you can use convolution to process impulses of EQ & compression devices as well as reverb devices & spaces!
Pristine Space, Convoboy, AnalogFlux Suite, IR1, Q Clone & SIR are a few decent choices.
Convolution proccessing can sound fantastic with the right impulses but tends to be heavy on resources though with the power of todays PC's they are becoming more widely used as bread 'n butter effects.

Possibly because most people around here will already use them, or will have tried them...SIR and a shitload of decent impulses at Noisevault are free. How come nobody ever mentions IR Reverbs?

To me, the coolest thing about convolution is creating one's own IRs. At the heart, a convolution engine is sort of like a filter with a really really long set of coefficients. Therefore it can be used to accomplish nearly any arbitrary digital filter, so long as the filter is time-linear.ghost666 wrote:The coolest thing is that you can use convolution to process impulses of EQ & compression devices as well as reverb devices & spaces!
The upshot of that is you can use convolution to create all kinds of wild effects, ranging from huge ambient smears to wild delay lines to weird modulations and so on.
Convolution is soooo much fun!

I remember the first time I convolved a vox snippet with a drumloop by accident using a convolver in either cool edit or an early version of acoustic mirror (in sound forge)...took about 10 mins for the file to process on a 200MMX pentium machine, but it was like finding a new colordburgan wrote: The upshot of that is you can use convolution to create all kinds of wild effects, ranging from huge ambient smears to wild delay lines to weird modulations and so on.
