ok, I need some sidechain compression on a track. but I need somekind of compressor that can sidechain in Ableton Live.. Free VST would be nice.

You might want to check out otiumFX COMPADRE beatpuncher. More info and a trial version available here: http://www.otiumfx.com/compadre.php
It is not free but very reasonably priced.

Forgive my ignorance but what is "sidechaining" in this context?

I guess the host program must provide functions so that one audio source can trigger the dynamics of the compressor while it processes the sound from another sound source.

So I guess a VST plug must be able to get the sidechain sound from one track and the audio input from another track.

Well, not free but cheap enough, DX and not VST but the absolute best and easiest implementation of sidechaining in a compressor. Sounds great too. http://www.db-audioware.com/dB-D-dynami ... r-more.htm
