I need to do some audio analysis with fft spectrum analysers which I've never used before...

(I'm asked to do it in both time domain and frequency domain.)

I've found several versions of them.
but I don't know which one is good enough to do the analysis

what do you recommend?
and what key features should be included by a good analysis software or vst plugin?

SPEAR might be good enough for you. Gives you a visual representation of what frequencies occur in your material and at what time. Unfortunately, it's pretty much useless in terms of measuring amplitude.

SNDAN (assuming you're a PC guy) is a lot more difficult to operate, but hard to beat in terms of detailed analysis.

Both are free.

I've seen these before but have no idea how they are used.

Can someone explain what they do and how you would use the information they provide?
