first this is just a question, it hasn't happened too me..but I'm sure it must of happened at least once to someone.

There are so many music forums and web groups and such, so many that none of us can hit them all...especially like the yahoo groups and such.

So what would you do if you went to a site and saw your song, with your recording, playing and composing posted by someone else on a forum claiming it to be their song?

For arguments sake the person posting your song is not making any money, or even fishing for a deal...they are just representing your song as proof they have talent. So as a lawsuit you would have no recourse, it's just a question of how would you react.

I'd be pissed off for sure.
For someone to do that they obviously would have to like your music, so there's an element of praise there, but it's a bit bloody low really isn't it.
I can kinda understand it more if someome tries to make money using someones elses talent, but to just pretend & tell people it's yours.
Very sad person indeed who is obviously seriously in need of some validation (& a slap around the back of the head with a very old fish).

laugh and go about my business for the day

what can you do really?
i mean you could of course write hom a very harsh post in capitals...
or you could ask for his address, on the offchance he lives within range you can give him a kicking.
but in the end, does it matter? you know the truth,if its just some guy tryna get a lady or a few friends leave the sad f**k to it

Happened to me a few years ago. It was a track that had a fair chunk of my stuff in it! The guy even emailed me with the url, "a brand new track from xxxxxx"

I started listening and then I started laughing, thought it was funny at first. He had some sections that were just me and unaltered, then I realise I comprised about 2/3 of the track.

I must admit I did then delete all my tracks and cd from the website.

Like vurt said, what can you do.

:D fake
You cant beat people up then have them say "I love you"

I'd be like - WTF - only freaked out freakniks listen to my crap - what a freaky freaked out freaknik!

PM a mod about it? Linking to proof?

Post

I'd be thrilled. Then I'd call a lawyer.
No. Seriously, I'd probably send an email and try to make some noise, but I'd certainly be flattered on the inside. That's it. Flattered on the inside, medieval on the outside :)

I'd feel honoured that someone actually appreciates my music enough to steal it :D

Yeah, first, contact a moderator. Then if that doesn't work, the owner of the site the board is hosted on. Worst comes to worst, do a WHOIS on the domain and send a snailmail + email to the administrative contact! :tantrum:

Help stamp out the thieving weasels that pull this crap! :tantrum: :tantrum:

btw if I dont respond it's because I'm just interested in the different respones...for me I would be stunned...I'd write a thousand responses that never got posted, as the same with emails never sent...the only thing is I'd keep my eye on it...just in case they did take it gold...;)

I think I'd post a response to the thread stating that I'm glad the turd liked my music enough to copy it, and that if others like that track, they can hear more of my work here. And then maybe I'd post 3 or 4 alternative mixes of the same song, using different instruments and altering some of the MIDI tracks, thus proving it's actually mine.

And I'd follow it all up with a note to the Mod and a PM to the slimeball.

Firstly I'd be staggered that anyone liked what I produce enough to use it as evidence of any talent.

Secondly I'd send them a thankyou note for actually finishing a song for me (more than I've ever done!)

Thirdly I'd post a load of reviews under assumed names saying how great the song was and asking for more. Then I'd wait a week or so and start posting lots of notes along the lines of "I was looking for some more songs from xxx as the only song of his I've ever heard is one of my all-time favourites but I couldn't find any. Luckily I found some by some guy called derek_up_north which have a similar vibe so I suggest you all check them out at www.madeupwebsite.com" or something like that.

Devious, me ?!? :hihi:

Derek.

Apparently, all you need to shut anyone down and appease your every whim, is to send them a "Cease and Desist Letter" signed by an attorney. Nobody seems to have ever had to pursue legal processes ever since this magical letter was invented. It seems you can get any internet provider to do anything you'd like, just by sending them a letter.
