Plugsound sample format

Are there any free tools to convert the .dat files Plugsound uses to any other formats? I'd like to use some of the World of Synthesizers stuff in Crystal, in SF2 format. I've got VSampler 3, so I can convert lots of stuff to SF2, just not the Plugsound files.

As far as I am aware, not even MOTU MachFive will read USB dat files...
You might have to record a few notes in your sequencer, then export, then import into another sampler... Sounds like more work than it's worth.
Plugsound modules are pretty inexpensive though. WOS and Fretted are pretty good for the price. Not great, but pretty good.

I remember reading about this free VST host that could generate samples automatically from VSTi's, but the web site was gone or something. Any idea where that went?

I remember someone loaded the .dat file from Atmosphere into Audacity as raw PCM data and dissembled and ripped some samples from it. I forget the exact procedure, as there are quite a number of raw formats that Audacity will import, but I did it with Plugsound free and it all is there in one big wav file. Probably not altogether legal, and any samples you get out will have to be looped and snipped, might not be worth the effort unless the samples are really nice.

That sounds interesting...
Here's the host I was talking about:

Unfortunately, the site seems to have disappeared. Anybody know where I could find it?

Not freeware, but DiscoDSP Highlife sampler can host and auto-sample vsts and save them as sfz files (you'll have to convert these to sf2 to use in Crystal)
I think Chainer can save sf2 out of the plugins it hosts. Haven't tried it though.
EDIT: Chainer's the ticket. Export to sf2 works in demo mode as well.

btw. reverse engineering or copying the samples like that might be against the EULA or copyright.
(I don't say that you shouldn't do it, but be sure that what you're doing is either legal, or make the choice to do it illegally

Well, I'm just going to be using the samples for my own personal use, not distributing them online or anything. But I will check the license and see what it says.
