The missus has questionable music taste (at least she doesn't like the same stuff as me). Right now she's listening to Damian Marley's album - it doesn't do much for me at all but I'm a pretty big fan of his late dad....which got me thinking:

If Bob was alive today, and by that I mean a young man (of this generation if you like), what would his music be like? I doubt it would be as raw as it was and would be over produced, I also think he would in no way be as big a star nowadays - partly because I don't think that kind of stardom really happens anymore and also because dying does seem to work wonders for music and film stars...

Any thoughts?

I liked welcome to jamrock - kinda old school soundsystem style, but the rest of the lp I found kinda dissapointing.
I've often wondered what kind of music Bob would have been making if he hadn't tragically died.
As to the questions on rawness & how big a star he would be, there's still some fairly raw stuff coming from jamaica, but you have to dig deep past all the dancehall crap (do'n like it) - I kinda like a lot of capleton's stuff now he's gone all 'jah rastafari' - but Bob's stuff seemed a product of his times also, bit like early Burning Spear - i'd like to think that Bob wouldn't have gone all watery & weak like Burning spear did.

Anyone listened to Gyptian? If you haven't you're in for a shock. He is probably the best answer to your question Cyper, soulful, intelligent, balanced and with great music. The kid still has to prove himself, but what I have heard from him so far is as good as Marely (IMO). He is going to be big, mark my words.

No one ever listened to me when I said Fat Boy Slim, Eminem, Dizzie Rascal, Groove Armada, Kanye West, Lethal Bizzie were going to big.

Well Gyptian is going to be huge, and no one will listen to me now!

Not bad, but he has about twenty years to go before I put him in Bob's league.

If Bob was of this generation, there'd be nothing different concerning his celebrity, IMO. It wasn't his music (which by the way is genius, and timeless), it was his spirit. His music would be different of course (hell, reggae would've never gone international if it wasn't for Bob) but his celebrity was due to the message of his music first, and the quality of his musical compositions second.

A lot of people don't realize that Bob was (and is) revered because he was a social leader. A lot of people who like his music don't realize that. To me, he was in the same vein as Malcolm X, etc. The only difference was that his main medium was music rather than speech and text.

Oh yeah, bob would've been a super mega star in any generation.

Bear in mind that he'd already 'watered down' his reggae by the time he turned into a global act. Although that's watering down in the sense of introducing more rock elements to appeal to a non jamaican audience rather than in the sense of compromising on the message.

And they're still genius tunes. Obviously.
