Simulate a bass with a guitar?

I want simulate a bass guitar for record with my guitar(I don't get one).
When I use the Oktaver in Guitar Rig 2 it fails to octave the note I play on the guitar at random but always if I play the low E string. In general, fails with low notes and it plays correctly with more high notes. Anybody knows a workaround for that? I would like to use it to simulate a bass guitar with the dry signal at 0 and one octave down at full volume, and the sound is very good with the bass amp, but can't use it having this problem.
Other plugin can I use for this?
Thanks.

You should try out ChoPitch at http://www.mathons.com, it isn't quite an octaver machine, but for dropping any single-note line it's perfect. It's very effective as all it does is playback the incoming signal slower instead of actually trying to pshift it.
hope that helps..

I don't have Guitar Rig, so this is general advice. Tracking gets easier the higher the pitch, you'll get better results playing an octave higher and then sub it two octaves down, if Oktaver does that.

Or just tune down, and use EQ settings appropriate for bass. (boost around 120Hz, cut around 500-800Hz) If you use heavy strings you can drop the tuning down and forget using an effect. Instant short scale bass guitar.

Thanks for your replies. I will try Chopitch, seems good.
Guckli, Okataver in GR2 does not have the feature of playing an octave higher.
Burny, do you mean as a pitch shifter offline a plugin like the ChoPitch?

I couldn't get chopitch do do that for me. I like it for other stuff, but when I tried to make bass from the guitar it just sounded wrong. Maybe I was too impatient with it, I dunno...
But my wife bought be a Fender Precision for christmas, so I don't have that problem anymore!

Honestly it's not worth the effort to process a guitar to sound like a bass. You could easily get a better sound with a $89 bass or using synthesizer.

I just use Tracktion's built-in pitch-shifter. The sound is generally horrible for most things, but for whatever reason (something to do with the physics of a sound wave I guess) it works for dropping my guitar down an octave.
Mind you, I inherited a Hagstrom a short time ago, so I have an ACTUAL short-scale bass now.

I second that. I bought a Rogue bass from Musician's Friend for that very reason. Even a cheap bass is better than trying to fake one. Especially if you already know how to play guitar. But even keyboardists can pick up the bass pretty quickly.LiquidClear wrote:Honestly it's not worth the effort to process a guitar to sound like a bass. I use a prosoniq mastering compressor\EQ, wich was able to synthesize a subBass from anything you throw at him i didn´t have to pitch shift in the end.
The sound was quite satisfying, well if you are into industrial sounds.

I'm with the buy a cheap bass crowd on this. You just won't get the guitar to sound like a bass.
However, if you have a keyboard, you could play a bass-like sound with the synth of your choice, then use Guitar Rig to process it to get it sounding right.

I'll jump on this bandwagon too, between Squier, Danelectro, and maybe even Rogue, there are some good basses to be had on the cheap. Plus if you're a guitar player the learning curve is really minimal for simple bass lines, so it's not like you're approaching the instrument as something completely new.sposey1969 wrote:I second that. I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Or just use the 4Front Bass Module.
