Hi

Is the Cubase SX3 Dongle different to the SX2 Dongle? do you have to authorize it using an internet connection before SX3 can run?

Thanks.

Post

yep, the same dongle that holds the SX2 license can hold the SX3 one - afaik SX2 users who upgraded just got an activation code to download the new license.

if you buy the full version of SX2 or SX3, the dongle that comes in the box has the license already activated and installed in it. you don't need to connect to the internet, or download or authorize anything to use cubase.

Hi Muff

Thanks for the info it's much appreciated.

I maybe getting a full version of SX3 and not sure if it's been updated to 3.1…… if I do need to update it to 3.1 will I need to authorize the dongle on the internet to do the 3.1 update?

Or can I just run the update with the Dongle included.

Thanks again.

Hi,

I just installed SX3 on a friend's computer, and no authorization was required. The 3.1 update will install new Syncrosoft drivers and stuff, but you don't need to download anything since the license itself doesn't change, just the specific protection method.

sorry for the delay - you won't have to activate or download any new licenses with 3.1 - won't be needed 'til 4.0 is released, the 3.x license that's included on the dongle in your 3.x box is good for ANY 3.x Cubase install. Newer versions will need newer Synchrosoft software, however this is included in the 3.1 update that you'll be downloading anyway.

In short - untill you buy a newer MAIN version of Cubase (4.x) the license that ships on the dongle will be good without needing any internet communication.

I know Dongles are a contentious issue, and this opinion will be disputed, but I really feel Steinberg has made it easy and unintrusive. I have 5 different product licenses on my Dongle and it's always been a breeze.

Just a note of warning: always remove or disable your dongle before running an SX install or upgrade. If you don't feel like physically unplugging it, you can disable it using the Device Manager. Just re-enable it once the upgrade/install is finished.

Thanks JS.
