im trying to setup surround in nuendo 3 but no luck so far... i have an m-audio audiophile firewire and i have connected the front and back speakers in outputs 1 & 2. now i go to the vst connections/outputs in nuendo and make a new 5.0 surround bus. i assigned the front speakers to output 1 and the back to output 3 and since i only have four speakers i left the "center speaker" as not connected.
im loading absynth and the output comes only from the front speakers. stereo audio files in 5.0 audio tracks with surround fx applied will do the same...
in short i cant get surround sound. only the front speakers work, but only when in nuendo... absynth works great as a standalone.
any ideas?

The best place to find answers to Nuendo is on the Nuendo forum. I have it and love it, but I think it's a bit over the top (price-wise) for this forum.

The Nuendo forum would be an excellent place to look, though.
I use Nuendo at work, in a Surround configuration, but it's a complicated setup where the Nuendo RME card's ADAT outs are sent out to a Yamaha O2R, and then to the physical monitors, but the Outputs in Nuendo are fairly straightforward: BUS 1 = L+R, BUS 2 = Ls + Rs, and BUS 3 = C + LFE (or these can be broken down into mono sends). What you're describing should work, I'm not sure why it wouldn't. Did you check the outputs in VST Connections?
