Guitar FX, Amp & Cabinet Modeling -- Going Beserk!

Here I am, a happy guy with Vox's Tonelab, a PodXT and Guitar Rig 1. You figured I've got every FX, amp and cabinet known to man with those three, right?

Then like some innocent bystander, there's an avalanche of products coming out in a very short time span: Guitar Rig 2! Amplitube 2! And the mother of them all, Boss' GT-PRO, which looks like it not only models everything Boss ever cranked out, but it costs a small fortune ($800-$900) and can power a Third World country.

Heck, musicians in the 70s, 80s and 90s never had these problems. Now, you don't even know where to begin if you're a lazy bum like me who does not want to spend hours physically setting up mics to record amplifiers.

Anybody hear any of these things? Can anybody afford any of these things?

I happen to think the standard is the free Simulanalog plugs. See how these other expensive Amp sims stand up to Simulanalog before you buy.

Then do A/B comparisons with the real amps to see how good the plugs really are. One you can't tell the difference, the plugs are as good as they will ever be.

I red somewhere (GP I think), that BRMC recorded their guitars with a tubescreamer straight into the board (Jimi Page Style), and just EQ'ed and compressed it just right.

In any case, I'm just learning my TonePort. It really pays to not be a preset whore. I have to admit, my first few days I was like, "Dammit, where's the expressive BB King clean tone?" Sure enough, it just took some preset-building from the ground up.

Simulanalog is great. I'll continue to use it! But let's face it, that's only 2 models. A Twin and a JCM900. 2 amps were enough for many people in the world, but they're not quite enough for me.

I've got a L6 Vetta and it really does sound good, but it takes a lot of tweaking. The DC30, Chieftain, Spinal puppet, Insane, Chemical X, Bomber XTC, Lead 100 and Mood are my favorit amps. Cabs makes a huge impact on sound. Use whatever makes you sound good. I like the Hiwatt and the matchless 2X12 a lot. L& 4X12 is also nice.

I'm still delving into my Pod 2.0. But nothing beats the VOX Valvetronix for its sounds/simplicity ratio. You get a few knobs and that's it. But its great, I'm measuring everything to it.

I'd have thought the VOX Tonelab + PodXT would meet your needs (cover the bases).

I personally have always been a little underwhelmed with software guitar suites like amplitube or guitar rig. I've just never really been able to program any distortion that'd make me happy...

I settled on a VOX Tonelab myself, and have been pretty impressed with what it can do... I also just recently picked up a KORG PX4 just for its portability.

But to be honest, I am almost starting to like the PX4 more than the Tonelab. My only complaint about it would be that the effects are somewhat limited when it comes to tweaking them... But the thing does sound quite good none-the-less.

They are wonderful products to "volatilize" your money...

SimulAnalog Guitar Suite is fantastic. Add Voxengo Boogex, FreeAmp SE and Chimp from Fretted Synth Audio, some plugins from TbT Audio and others more...

End of story = Fantastic guitar sound/setup ( and your money remains in the pockets, to spend it in music... ).
