At www.sf2midi.com you will find several specialized sound effects banks. The site has it's own search engine. For a generic sound effects bank you can get the one from Roland Sound Canvas at www.hammersound.net in the soundfont SCC1T2

God help them if Roland find out about this - they will have their arses sued and screwed to the wall and then spat on by their successful lawyers!bro. miles wrote:For a generic sound effects bank you can get the one from Roland Sound Canvas at www.hammersound.net in the soundfont SCC1T2
Roland are particularly careful (i.e. litigious) about copyright contravention and they take no prisoners.

Aren't you aware the Roland soundcanvas sampleset is in every copy of Windows since 1998? It's the Microsoft synth. It exists as a DLS sampleset in System32 folder. This very same sampleset was converted to soundfont format and has been widely circulated on the internet, and as far as I know Roland is not upset about it. You could get the same sounds out of any windows computer (with a lot of latency) just by sending MIDI to Windows Media Player. It is 22KHz sample rate and about 3MB in size. Roland is selling better versions now. Anyone can make this conversion themselves using freeware. I don't think I have accidentally 'outted' hammmersound since they say what the soundfont is in plain english and have hosted it for some years now.
It has the GM sound effects and of course the full GM soundset (in lo fi)

Yes, Roland licensed this to Microsoft for use exclusively within Windows.bro. miles wrote:Aren't you aware the Roland soundcanvas sampleset is in every copy of Windows since 1998? It's the Microsoft synth. It exists as a DLS sampleset in System32 folder.
And it's this "conversion" which is illegal and why Roland and MS would be perfectly within their rights to wipe the floor with someone if they felt so inclined. Roland probably is upset about it, but lets face it, the Microsoft synth is hardly a good soundset, in fact it's piss poor. Anyone who would want to use it, let alone copy and redistribute it in another format, must be pretty desperate for sounds. There are finer legal (and free) soundsets out there. The prolification of such a poor soundset probably has Roland laughing instead !bro.miles wrote:This very same sampleset was converted to soundfont format and has been widely circulated on the internet, and as far as I know Roland is not upset about it.
Like I said, piss poor quality. As for Roland selling better versions, well that's a matter of opinion. I own VSC and Hyper Canvas and neither of them are a patch on my hardware Roland SC-88.bro.miles wrote:You could get the same sounds out of any windows computer (with a lot of latency) just by sending MIDI to Windows Media Player. Yes, anyone can make a "conversion" as many already do make illegal copies of samples and pass them off as their own every day, especially at sf2midibro.miles wrote:Anyone can make this conversion themselves using freeware. A lot of honest sound devs have had Roland's legal squad (more often than not, the US division - no surprises there then
If we're honest the orginal Roland/MS soundset is so poor that it's probably hard to prove that a copy is the Roland/MS version, and maybe they don't pursue it because they'd be ashamed to admit it was theirs ! LOL

If you want a quick laugh check out Spectrasonics Atmosphere, and note how it was made - the author claims he sampled every synth and VSTi he could find. Then check out the sampling prohibition in the EULA. Are you finding any irony there or is it just me?
