works well the other way around, too. I had an epiphany with an already great impulse when I put the voxengo vintage chorus (or whatever the name of the thing with analogflux pack) after it. Still, this good sound takes a load of CPU for a reverb.multree wrote:if you want tail modulation just put a chorus on the aux bus, right in front of the reverb....

Yeah Glace verb is good and free but my favorite has to be the Ultrafunk one.jtxx000 wrote:here's the same file played through glace verb and ozone's mastering reverb: www.annoware.com/downloads/verbtest.wav

Of course, but since most people don't have high end lexicon verbs lying around impulses are the closest thing we have.Kingston wrote:Oh I just get itchy when impulses are equalled to something like system 6000 or 960L. They are far from it.

well, thats not the same, as in good reverbs the delays in the reverb_tail_ are modulated, that sounds quite different than a chorus placed in front of the reverb...multree wrote:well if you want tail modulation just put a chorus on the aux bus, right in front of the reverb....soma wrote:Hmmm... wondering how the Real Lexicon with tail modulations would sound.... Anyone have Wizoo W5 verb? I heard that thing does some cool tricks with impulses that can mimic the dynamic modulations of some of the better known gear.
i did this very often in the good old days, to prevent the digi coldness caused by bad resonances.
also, the modulation of the delays in high end hardware (and software) reverbs has to be highly optimized in the internal algorithm to sound good.
the only native reverb plugin that convinced me was the artsacoustic one ... thisone had the "lushness" that i missed in all other plugins.... but thats of course a matter of taste ...
the problem is, that this kind of modulation per definiton cannot be done in convo verbs.
one of many big advances of algorithmic verbs compared to convo ones ... imo ...

Hi Kingston,
I know it wasn't a "fair" shoot-out, but to be honest, as I mentioned, I was looking for that Lexicon-esque "sizzle" in the first place. A strictly, "Lexicon vs. The World" test was never my intent. It was just to find what makes it sizzle like that. And the answer is much longer high-decay than low-decay. Both the VSS3 and the ArtsAcoustic reverb offers the ability to split-band the reverb so that you can crank up the high-decay quite a bit. The ArtsAcoustic I've not used much, but then again, very often when I tweak reverbs I'm not sure what I want. Here it was easy to use the Lexicon impulse as a benchmark to try and reach, and the ArtsAcoustic did quite well (considering it held up next to the VSS3 in this test, even though it's a fair sight cheaper and also native). I think I'll be calling it into action quite a bit more, now that I know how to get the sounds I want out of it.
So, the comments about the costs of the reverbs were entirely for fun and shouldn't be considered worth any value whatsoever. If anyone would like to do their own tests (as jtx000 did), the file includes a dry version.
My conclusions are this: ArtsAcoustic reverb sounds closest without additional processing, as I had to add quite a bit of top-end EQ to the other samples (with a Wave Arts TrackPlug 5 EQ). Your mileage may vary, but I'm an ArtsAcoustic convert now (even though I've owned the plugin for months, go figure).
