Since the price is about the same, should I upgrade FL Studio to the Pro version, or should I buy energyXT?
Thanks,

it's hard to say when we don't know what your needs are...

The significant advantage of FLStudio Producer over Fruityloops editions is the improvements in the mixer and better handling audio recording.
EnergyXT is a WHOLE lot easier for me to use for layering, arps, etc than the FLS facilities. It does far more than that as well.
I have Soundforge Studio, Audacity, and Sonar for handling audio so I've never needed it in FLS. Your mileage may vary, but based on what I've said I'd say EXT right now.

I have only the fruityloops version of FLStudio and does everything I want. Not sure there's much benefit in the Pro version - at least for me. Buying a whole new app could give you a whole new method of working which would be refreshing (though I'll stick to my tried and tested methods
)

They're really two very different ways of working.
I'd recommend downloading and playing with the eXT demo for a bit, it's different enough that you might find it a bit hard to come to grips with. Read the starter guide that's available, it helps a lot!
What kind of music do you make? If it's mostly pattern-based stuff, I'd stick with FL if I were you.

Thanks for the votes and comments. I've been out running errands. I should have told you more about how I work -- basically midi, no loops. I'd like to be able to record audio from my hardware synths -- an Alesis Micron, a Prophet-600, and my drum machine -- but FL Studio Edition doesn't provide for audio input -- I'd have to upgrade to FL Pro for that, which is what I was considering. But I've read lots of good comments about sXT. Does it record audio?
Thanks,

A little more research, and I see that eXT does record audio. Seems to be a good solution -- but I'd have to learn another host, rather than learn a little more with FL Pro. Still undecided....

FL has audio recording and audio tracks but it works alot different from other hosts.
Other hosts will have an "acid" style linear layout, with the other stuff. Instead, FL Studio has audio tracks at the bottom which you can slice and dice and move around as you wish. Its not quite as powerful as other suites yet, but you can do pretty much everything you need in that area. Some people prefer it the FL Studio way, some people prefer it the "traditional" way. Your mileage may vary.
