This topic came up at work the other day, some one said that people who use computers to make music are not musicians, I say it's not true.....

I started out playing drums 40 years ago. I've played guitar for 20 years, keyboards (but not well  ) for about 20 years and bagpipes (my secret's out  ) off and on for about 10...

I started out 35 years ago formally/classically trained on piano; I've been playing guitar and bass about 27 years, and have played professionally both live and in the studio on keys, guitar, bass, Chapman Stick and vocals. Sooo, I guess I consider myself a musician. ;) And...yep: I most definitely use computers to make music. :)

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I played the violin regularly for 6-7 years in school, keyboards in the high school jazz band for a couple of years, picked up all kinds of random things for a while and noodled on them (harp, guitar, bamboo flute, psaltery, whatever), played synth via keyboard of necessity before I had anything to sequence with, currently mostly play hand percussion.

I am much more a composer than performer now, but that doesn't make me not a musician.

There are people who USE their computers to make music, and there are people who LET their computers make music.

I consider the ones that USE them to be musicians...playing the parts, or step entering, which is really a new form of scoring.
As for the ones that rely on pre-recorded loops and the manipulation of them by pressing a button or slamming a slider, I'd consider them to be engineers...not musicians. No offence to anyone, just my thoughts.

For me, I've played the keys for 33 years now. To my ears, I'm worse than I ever was! :hihi:

Happy New Year!

Actually, I was thinking more that the engineers are going to be the most pissed off, what with getting lumped in with the loop-users like that.

There're two types of musicians. There are performers and there are composers. Some composers double as performers and some performers double as composers. Being strictly a composer doesn't make a person any less of a musician, it just means they choose to focus their talents on writing music as opposed to playing it.
