Budget studio monitors or GOOD monitoring headphones?

Hi there,

Would it be better to go for some budget (powered) monitors or buy a really good pair of monitoring headphones

Monitoring Speakers I'm considering >>

Yamaha HS50M
Tannoy Reveal 6
M-Audio BX5a B-Stock

As for the headphones, well I have a pair of Senny HD25SP's, but they are a cheaper version of the HD25's and I don't know if they will be good enough?

I'd go for monitors every time. Headphones are good for certain things but only as a check, not as a primary tool.

Thanks, Bones. I've just been doing a bit more digging and I've read tonnes of positive reviews of the Behringer Truth 2031A's. So, may end up going for those. Fuly understand what you're saying about the cans, too.

I've read tons of bad things about the Behringer Truths. But don't let that put you off. Listen to them in a shop with a CD you know very well, and compare them to other monitors of 10x the price.

Try not to get fooled by "enthousiastic" reproduction of extreme high and low. You need average reproduction, not something that tickles your ears.

Cheers for that. I suppose (like everything else) all reviews are subjective. What would you recommend?. I was looking at the Yamaha HS50Ms. I want something that is for a small bedroom studio (nothing too loud) but that has VERY clean (uncoloured/flat) sound for maximum mix? I'm looking to spend around £250. Is there a general consensus for the BEST monitor in that price bracket?

Just got the Behringer Truth B2030A and they are great. I was mixing my songs with a Sennheiser HD 202 Headphone, which is TERRIBLE for mixing, too much bass and lacks the higher ranges.

Well, as for budget monitors, i'd go with the ADAM ANF-10. They are passive, cheap yet great for their value and also you could easly grab an affordable studio amplifier such as Alesis RA-150 or RA-300, or Samson Servo 500 for them.

Ive heard all those budget monitors out there from all brands and most of them sound really bad and inaccurate. And i can suerly say that the ADAM ANF-10 - for their price they kick hard all other budget toyz

My opinion of course...

BTW - NEVER and i mean NEVER EVER mix/master audio with headphones. A good reason to use headphones in music creation is to check/haer for noises or bad mixtures which you possibly couldnt fully notice with cheap budget monitors...or perhaps check the stereophonic "image" of your track to get an idea.. (Like checking sounds that sound in the background).
And of course... you could use headphones for listening a finished/mastered audio material (duh)

I mix on heaphones (Sony MDR-V-300's). It's like anything else, once you get to know them and their flaws, and crosscheck them against other hardware, you can mix on them... it's just more of a pain

I've bemoaned my lack of monitors for a while but have lived without them so far. I'm thinking that tiny budget monitors will be my next purchase, but I'm not going to stop making music in the meantime

Well its a bad thing to use headphones for mixing purposes. If you like it..suit yourself

If you've got a place acuoustically conditioned in the inside and isolated from the outside don't doubt in buying monitors, but if you must work by night I advice you to buy the AKG 240 Studio Headphones. You can work very long time with them on without getting ears tired (suppossing you work at a reasonable level), they are very confortable and they've got a truthfull frecuency range.

i use sennheiser hd580 for nite mixing, they sound very accurate (little to sweet on the top) for a pair of headphones but as always, headphones will not cover bass good, i got the truth B2031 speakers and they are very good for the money...
my advice it to first get some speakers and then get the headphones...

Thanks for all the advice, guys - Much appreciated. I've been looking at the AKG K271's, as a decent pair of can's. If my budget will stretch to it, I will go for the AKG's or similar and also try and get some Behringer 2301A's or Tannoy Reveal 6's.

Bear in mind that I still have to buy an E-Mu 1212m and CME UF6 Controller keyboard.

If anyone else can recommend stuff, please do.
