A question on Doru's ethnic sample pack

I heard a lot about this sample set and i think i really need it for some songs that i'm working on now. I have a few questions though :

1). Whats the major difference between the three versions he's offering : DVD, CD and rex? Whats the difference in quality? Like, is it audible or is it just numbers? (48 vs 44) What will i lose by purchasing one in place of another.

2). Does the CD/DVD version have the samples organized as folders? i.e. Tablas,Mridangam, etc?

3). The MAIN reason i'll be purchasing this is, i need TABLAS, MRIDANGAMs, DHOLAK, and TAVILs. These are THE main sounds i'm looking for cos i sequence for indian songs and 80% of the songs have a combination of these percs.

4). Whats the size of each sample? Lets say a tabla thak. Whats the size of this single sample? The reason i'm asking is, i'll be loading the samples in my Fantom S which currently has 32 MB ram. So, i hope the samples themselves dont take up that much space.

Finally, happy new year to everyone. Doru, hope your health is well. Take care. :)

I think there are just two versions now, both on DVD. One is 16-bit 44.1 kHz, the other is 24-bit 96 kHz. (Check the website to be sure.)

The samples are in named folders, yes. The variety is vast, and within each folder there are often a WHOLE LOT of samples.

The size of each sample depends on how long it is. Since you're limited in RAM, I'd suggest buying the 16-bit 44.1 kHz version and choosing shorter sounds. I can't tell the names of the tabla sounds from listening to the samples, and IIRC the filenames are just numbers, so I can't tell you how big a "thak" is.

HTH! It's an amazing bargain.

[edit] Righty, the last sample in the TABLA folder is "DM-TAB 136.wav" -- they're numbered consecutively, so you can see there's a fair variety! :-D

TABLA - 136 samples
MRIDANGAM - 44
DHOLAK - 32
TAVIL - 31

the file names are just numbers, but theyre organised into seperate folders on the disc.
rex is reasons sample format,so no use for your fantom at all.
as meffy says the size differs but they are on shot samples and trimmed as they should be so as small as they can be for the quality of the sound(16/24 bit)obviously 24 bit will be that bit bigger but they are not huge samples at all :)

Not the drums, but some of the gongs and bell-like instruments are pretty huge. (Yum.)

Thanks to Meffy and vurt for clearing some doubts.

I know its an amazing bargain, but i'll have to make use of it if i buy it. :) As you said, if i purchase this, i'll be buying the 44/16 version.

Vurt : In reason, you can load a rex file in Dr.Rex player, and export it as a wave file. In my Fantom S, you can chop wavefiles into seperate waves. Thats why i had purchased the World collection refill for reason sometime ago. I thought i'd have all indian-percs covered, but it only has tablas and some other small percs that i was able to make use of. FWIW, the tablas i have in my Fantom S are from the World refill. :)

OK, so i'm convinced that Doru's CD is definately going to help me. I know that no amount of sequencing i do can replace a real instrument, but atleast i'll try to sound decent. :) And this CD is now on my must-haves of this year. ;)

Hello my dear friends ! Sorry for this delay in answer !

There are 3 versions :

1. refill (1 CD - 326 Mb)
2. wavs DVD data version (1 DVD - 1,27 Gb) (16 bits/44100 hz)
3. wavs DVD data version (1 DVD - 4,15 Gb) (24 bits/96000 hz)

Refill version contain also wavs files ( not rex !) and can be loaded as different modules from Reason program using command " browse samples" !

Ofcourse 44100/16 bits version can be used by any musical program and 96000/24 bits can be used by programs which understand this resolution !

If you need more details , please ask me .

P.S. My health's situation is bad but i will continue to hope !

They have fabulously long decays. This is an area where there really are benefits to having a 24-bit sample, since we're talking about huge dynamic range between the attack and decay of a gong. If you have a way to use 24-bit samples, even if you really only use them as 16, I think it would be a good idea to buy the 24-bit version anyway, or someday, you will wish you had.

keyman,

The particular drums you are looking for are well represented in Doru's collection, and the quality
is outstanding. There are many variances of tones
and playing styles for each one of 'em too.

One slight problem - I'm a percussionist and still have never heard of half of these instruments.
Not to get off-subject, but has anyone made some kinda list of what is what? Somehow a Pemade and
Riqq have escaped my attention.

Don't know how I missed this - thank YOU.
In any case, this product is the greatest value I've
found from this forum, worth many times the price.
