Quite a philosophical thing...
Sorry, for not being more explicit. FYI: I was trying to keep it light and over-generalized. I'm thinking in terms of real-time triggers (e.g. Sax, Trumpet, piano keyboard, guitars, etc...), when I define a musical instrument. If someone wants to twist/turn a knob and or utilize an alphabetic keyboard to make a relative comparison- that's their call.
Sascha Franck wrote: Anyways, I don't think you need to grasp the basics of harmony and melody first. I'm pretty good at all that theory shit, yet I know about a lot of people with a way higher creative (musical) output than me, knowing almost nothing.
And sometimes their very interesting output seems to be related to their lack of knowledge. They can just use an Emaj as a dominant for Amin whereas with my glorious theoretical knowledge I'd never even try (unless I'd be treating it as some sort of modulation).
Pertaining to the basics of harmony/melody, I was including any recognition whatsoever for putting together something musical. For some, it's materialiustic theory; for others, it's a feeling; etc... I certainly wouldn't limit one's ability to create music to their understanding of music based on what the dominant (i.e. materilaistic) schools teach. After all, it's all about the notes you play and the way you play them. Who cares what their handle is? However, if one is a 2nd trumpet player, it would certainly behoove them to understand how to read music and know how arrangements work, whereas a certain guitar player might not know any of that (theory) stuff and still be able to play off his band members just as cohesively.

it takes skill to play the computer's keyboard. i think that and the mouse qualify the computer as a playable instrument

I play the computer. It is my second instrument after guitar, although the one I spend most time creating music with.

Point. I mean, there's so many more notes than the piano keyboard, which only goes from "A" to "G" and just repeats.

Plus, you have all of the extraneous stuff like "%^#$@*&", etc... :hihi:

I guess I'm in denial, as I just can't get myself to admit that I play the computer. In fact, I use MIDI controllers to avoid mousing around and having to touch that dreadful keyboard with all of the letters on it! Is there a name for this phobia?

Which is fine but when I first performed live I used a fully analogue set-up with no microprocessors in sight, except maybe in my 303's which I used as my sequencers back then. Hardly comparable to what anyone thinks of as a computer.
I do understand what you said. I started at 14 with an spanish guitar and it was my main (and only) instrument for a lot of years and the first time I performed live also

Indeed. What's the conceptual difference between a church organ and a keyboard/DAW/amp/speaker setup? None ... one is electromechanical, the other is electronic and mechanical. In this context the computer becomes part of a musical instrument, just as much as the fan of the church organ does ... you can certainly use the fan for other purposes, as you can the computer. The ensemble of components is the instrument. You play it, it makes music (hopefully )
When I was younger I used to be in doubt. These days I'm not so sure.

I don't play the computer, it plays itself.

25+ years of guitar (classical and jazz), years of piano lessons as a music student (taking new lessons now, 13 years later), plus I've played alto horn, trumpet, flute, and uke. Oh, and I sang in choirs for ten years or so. :)

Now of course I just drag loops into Ableton Live and record them straight to MP3. :D
