I voted no for "abba" as well, if "ABBA" would've been an alternative, I would've gone for that.

Absolutely, positively YES !!

Get past the image, get past the kitsch and you have two guys who have written some of the most complex yet accessible pop melodies ever. Some of their stuff is deceptively technical and detailed yet at the same time is so easy to listen to. The fact they are lauded by not only their fans but their peers, both new and old, is a testament to their ability and the high esteem in which they are held.

Sadly, this will get flamed, inparticularly, I guess, by the younger members here who just see "camp" !! LOL

I've got past the image, by merit of having it drummed into my ears for the formative years of my adolescence by an older sister and a delinquent mother. There's a lot of sophistication, great songwriting and catchy hooks there for sure, but somehow their attempts at disco lack any of the soul that great disco should have for me. Some of their slower numbers such as Fernando, etc, are more palatable, simply because they seem more "honest" and truer to who the band really are.

P.S. any objectivity on my part is disclaimed due to the traumatic teenage experience mentioned earlier

They did write many great songs

For the record, and dropping for the moment my claim that I am ABBA: I like ABBA okay, probably because I heard them rarely. IMO their songs were about 50% catchiness, 50% production. Kinda like ELO but different.

Agreed. I think it's partly nostalgia and partly not having to hear it all over the airwaves. I find this true of many groups and artists whose fame rests partly on the extreme catchiness of their songs. Why, I can almost bear to hear some of the big-airplay songs of the 1980s... almost...

[edit] Then again, we might be comparing those tunes with what came after and thinking "if only we'd known how good we had it!" ;-) [edit edit] ... or is that just another way of saying "nostalgia?" *ponder*

Agreed. I had a similar experience with Duran Duran. Bought their compilation CD (2nd hand) a couple years ago and liked some of their songs OK.

BTW, I find that being an old fogey/out of the loop can have a similar effect on the appreciation of contemporary music. I can listen to some contemporary artist on the radio and enjoy the song even if I'm 99% certain that the video clip / PR campaign / Rolling Stone writeups / TV interviews are bound to be ultra-lame.
