Well with music you gotta have a balance (for the kind of music I like).. I like to hear quality timbre in my music, and that sometimes requires expensive/rare gear. I like hearing a quality synth or reverb. But actual composition of a tune is equally important. Its all about the overall mood. Balance is the key.

I'm not having a pop specifically at you AudioWhore. You've just articulated an attitude that's all to common on KvR. The idea that timbre is as important as composition. It never has been. It never will be.
There is a fundamental difference between sound and music, and all the synth widdling and expensive kit in the world won't change that.

indeed nuffink, i listen to the spades your gonna miss me,and the energy in that track alone far outweighs the need for any of todays fancy gear. im not going into detail and there are a million other tracks recorded on one microphone from the earliest period of studio recording,where for each record sold the band had to play and record live onto each pressing,dont tell me there is less in those recordings than any of todays pristine 24 tracks for a drumkit alone recordings.

I once was told that a good song should work on an acoustic guitar alone. Over the years I got rid of that stoopit idea. Sounds are important to me. They do inspire me. With different sounds I do different things. "Good" Sounds (sounds that do work for me) are fuel to my creativity.

I have to disagree, if you replaced all the instruments in a rolling stones song with kazoos and banjos I doubt it would have come across the same. I think timbre plays a major role in giving voice to composition. Take a piece of classical music and start replacing instruments, it will definitley change the feel of the composition. The sounds and the composition go hand in hand. They each have an impact on the other. What I don't agree with is good gear will automatically give you great timbre and therefore great songs. The bottom line is any creative endeavour takes TALENT, nothing will change that. The gear is always secondary to the person.

It depends on the kind of music you are talking about. Music that fits your category is, by and large, music that I find all but totally ineffectual. The kind of music that I like certainly depends at least as much on timbre as it does on composition, possibly more.
