Hi all,
Just wondering how people related listening and performing music to their spiritual lives and practices. I realize there is a broad spectrum of answers. There are so many aspects to consider , for example ragas in Classic Indian music. Planets are said to emit particular notes. We have a sound in our ears at all times that some say you can follow back to the source. Many musicians consider themselves as channels for music. New Age music is used widely for meditation and healing, etc. Religious worship usually involves hymns, etc. Where do you see music fitting in or where do you use it in your form of spirituality?

I cannot see any boundary there, for me there is no line between spiritual practices and "other things". Music is one of the ways of expressing innerself, or if you like inner-unself.

But anything can be used in such a way.
It is nice in practice because I have noticed that for instance, I never ever think about having or not having "insiration" because I am aware that channel is always there, so it is just up to us to turn it on or off by doing certain things. For me music is primary a way to communicate and express myself, and to came in contact with some aspects of me I cannot touch in usual way, but I am quite aware it can be very valuable tool for acheiving certain state of mind, tried it.

My view is still evolving. I feel that we are channels for music. In my own private life I use music for spiritual attunement and growth. I am not much attracted to music that feels negative. Having said that, I play bass in a Jimi Hendrix cover band, so I don't have an aversion to rock or loud music in general. I have tried the meditation where you follow the sound in your ear back to the source. Ragas are very interesting to me and some feel very uplifting, etc. I try to surround myself with harmonious music, visuals, smells, etc. Music is definitely a legal high for me! Is that a better answer Vervil?

i get lost in hearing harmonies and playing them. for some songs, i focus the message to enlighten. these things are what i assume ppl mean by spirituality

I do see my music fitting in my spirituality,
but I don't *use* it, just I think I'm unable to use rationally that sense of music

Thanks Riley, The recent thread about is music genetic got me to thinking about this one. Thinking about Fripp and his self-professed lack of talent was part of it. The fact that he is heavy into spirituality is another part. It also reminds me of Phil Keaggy who was Hendrix's fave guitar player back in the day. Now he plays Christian music as opposed to the psychedelic stuff he did with Glass Harp.(I love that stuff too!) I am rambling now. Off to bed .

Perhaps "use" was not the best word. I certainly don't mean it in the sense of abuse or sponging, etc. Perhaps the question is better worded without the word use. So, where do you see music fitting in your form of spirituality? Hope that is better....

Spirituality in music! Isn't it bad enough that we are musicians without getting all religious? God save us all from turning into Godda Bigga Ego (formerly known as Cat Stevens) - except of course God doesn't exist - thanks Buddha for taking away the world's most popular blame system.

But seriously, I too think that the moment that we separate spiritual and physical then we lose track. Be honest, be moral and "Rock on Dudes"
