damn thanks for posting that, don't know why i didn't see it. this makes it tougher to decide, i wish it was a 60gig like the cowon, now time to compare the two.

For those interested, Cowon / iAudio previewed a new small 4GB hard drive based player with colour OLED display at CES.

to the original poster, for your requirements, the player best suited is the iRiver H320 or the H340. it has all those features u are looking for.

charge thru usb, no software installation for XP, light enuf and good battery life, plays lots of formats incl ogg vorbis, has a mic in and line in, and phones out as well as line out.

Now Beat That. I've been using one for over a year and its been a joyride. Best of All not that pricey too...

So dont think twice just go for it.... Cheers

BUT you can download a very nice, simple fast program called "sharepod", that you copy directly on the ipod. That means you can go at a friends and take mp3 from him without having to install itunes on his computer.
and last but not least : transfer mp3's from the ipod to HD, wich i never managed to do with itunes (but maybe i'm dumb)

also ipod appear as an usb drive and charges automatically when connected to usb.

So i don't think it is that "out of the ballpark".

At first, I was not very happy my sister wanted a ipod, as i hate hype things, but now i admit it's a nice object and works very fine, unlike the Philips crap for instance. and as it's not more expensive than others...

What I would really like is not to have to carry lots of small devices on me. For the life of me I can't see why PDA manufacturers have been so resistive to incorporating the sort of small harddrives that are found in MP3 players - I'm wondering if they have deliberately decided its more lucrative to have people having to buy 2 or 3 devices than make an all in one. The only PDA I could find with anything like a HD is the Lifedrive model but even then its a measly 4 GIG. So I think I'll wait till someone has the sense to develop one (its crazy that these mobiles they have now that hold MP3's only hold about 100 - do they have some "non competition" clause?)

Thanks for the heads up, josevin - the iRiver looks like a great choice indeed.

Mokafix, when using an iPod on a machine without anything installed, you'll only be able to use it as an external USB drive. No way to listen to MP3s that you drag onto it. And I doubt people would be happy if I'd install those "helper" programs (that I allready knew about) on their machines.
Plug in (into *any* machine), drag files, done. After that I should be able to access all files from within the player. The iRiver apparently is up to the task. No further software required. It "just works", hehe...

What's the approximate battery life like? Not that I fear overusing it (I may need it for 5-6 hours of battery operation), but of course longer battery life won't harm.
