I would guess that RaySpace is more aimed at competing with convolution reverbs... and in that sense, its CPU appears to be lower. I may do a test later against some convolutions I've got to see if I can replicate the sound and check the CPU - my guess is that it would be very much lower.

I tried playing around with Rayspace 2 - cranking up the rays to 512 and raising diffusion above 100% putting some more HF filtering on some of the bigger and more complex presets spaces. The resulting reverb tails were amazingly smooth - not grainy at all. I think it needs to be tested with a range of applications to see how it actually sits in a mix but listening to drums and synth patches through it is really quite amazing - especially in light of the modest CPU.
I would agree that in operation this works more like convolution verbs in that you start with the properties of a set space (set by the choice of impulse in the convolution case) and tweak from there rather than having a full set of continuously variable parameters allowing you to grab a couple of sliders and get the acoustics of everything from a shoebox to an underground parking garage.

But you can draw your own rooms with the mouse! The general scale and absorbency of your room can be controlled instantly with the 'wall,' 'air' and 'scale' knobs.
