This really is cool. I was specifically on the fence about whether to buy Sonik Synth because I wasn't sure I could pull off a Genesis-sound with it. You sure resolved that question.

It would be especially useful if you could post as much details as possible about the instruments used (and maybe some sort of MIDI file?). That way we could learn from your expertise.

Actually, this wasn't meant to be a demo of SS2's ability to sound like Genesis. This was just me having fun. But, I use Sonik Synth all the time. Actually in the beginning part the tron flute is from the Squids Tron Collection which is now available again on www.esoundz.com That works with SampleTank. We might release it in other formats too if anyone is interested.

Anyway, then there's an Antique Upright patch from SS2 layered with a CP70 patch (and I put an SS2 chorus on it... some day maybe we'll have the CE-1 model built into Sonik Synth... hehe... Squids reveals his master plan! ;) ). Then when the drums kick in (those are from an upcoming drum loop library done with Nick D'Virgilio, a drummer I used to play with in Kevin Gilbert's band and has played with PG, Genesis, TFF and Spock's Beard) there's a Ricky 4001 bass patch run through SS2's guitar amp fx (borrowed from AmpliTube). It is a little fuzzed overloaded but... for now it did the trick.

Then when the lead comes in, there actually is the same sound inside SS2. But, I used a real Arp ProSoloist for that part because of the way the portamento sounds. It's a little different. But, without the portamento it sounds practically the same.

The organ sound is a layer of a Hammond sound and the RMI in SS2. The RMI is run through SS2's built-in phaser which is modeled off of MXR phasers but is even more powerful (a nice phaser in SS2! All fx courtesy of the SampleTank engine it has). Then there's the Mellotron Choir sound which I filtered a bit (maybe too much actually but... this wasn't really "mixed", it was just "exported" as-is).

That's it! The file is too big (not just midi, there's audio tracks in there) and I don't know if I would be posting that anyway. Sometimes I would. Maybe not in this case. It is hard enough to play it with the various mistakes that it has in the first place. Mistakes in isolation are worse. ;)

When will this Genesis style pack be out?

And can anyone recommend or upload some patches for Genesis style sounds for Sonik Synth 2

Please!!

:D
For the next big update to Sonik Synth I will organize the patches a bit differently so those sounds can be found easier, and I will do a "Tony" bank. ;)
Right up my alley Squids. You talked about doing some Prog Combi's for us. Is that gonna be part of the next SS update? Also, you were gonna see about finding the Combi you used for that YES thing you did a while back, which IMHO was as impressive as this one. This is the sort of stuff that floats my boat, and one of the reasons I'm a happy eSoundz customer. :)

BTW, 010 Wicked Organ in SS2 is great for that dirty hammond sound like John Lord (and others)used. 004 Arp PWM Ld is a great sound for leads of this genre. Play around with the Portamento and you can do some great stuff that really cuts through.

If your taking requests, I would love to get that moog lead sound that Wakeman used in You and I.

Very nice, Squids. Another early-Genesis fan here. Well, reminding of those magic years whilst looking at Gallo's wonderful I know what I like book. The supper's ready and I am now feeling nostalgic.. I will now receive my comfort in the twilight alehouse..

Hi there Squids.

Would you be able to take a picture of that Arp lead patch so we could se how it's programmed.
I came really close recreate it by ear on vaz2010, but it would be nice to no exactly how it was done on the Arp synth.
Thanks for the demo
Ole

I am just mute. You know I enjoyed that immensly Dave! Now how did you do that distorted Rick? Sounds very authentic. Also Nick´s drums. Hm...me (us)wants. :) Happy new year! 2006 = The Year Of The Prog.

edit: I just read through the whole thread and
saw how you created the Rick. I did almost the same. (through "Scream" in Reason. :)

I find it hard to believe that your legendary performance with Kevin Gilbert at ProgFest was ten years ago. Man, where does the time go?

Squids, if you're going to do a Genesis tribute project, please have a look at the "A Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering" period. Those are my all time favorite albums and nobody ever covers that stuff.

The Musical Box in Canada has everything up through "The Lamb" already covered.

I agree with you Wheat, these are the best albums they ever made. Although I like most of their other records too, I always come back to these as their finest output.

Wow, so cool to hear fellow musicians 'interpreting'/talking about my favourite band!
Some serious stuff in this thread! tnx for the samples...
btw. in a few days I'll be seeing 'The musical box' in Amsterdam performing the entire 'Lamb'
Can't wait!

Hey Pauloos, have fun at that concert! I saw it in LA. It is brilliant. The drummer is just like Phil. You'd swear it was him! Seeing the slides was just awesome. The only thing that sucked for me was the people next to me singing every line really bad.

Wheat, I have been busy preparing for NAMM but I meant to reply back to you and YES I want to do all that stuff, for sure. It'll be fun. I will prepare a plan.

As for Trick of the Tail and Wuthering, yes I love those two as well. I don't think Wuthering is one of their best SOUNDING records though. I think Selling England and Trick maybe are. Then the raw sound of the Lamb. Duke is also one of my favorites and actually I like the raw fat sound of Abacab as well. Everything after that is sort of hit and miss for me.

Song-wise I like pretty much everything from Trespass to Abacab... even Who Dunnit! A few things off the later albums like "It's Gonna Get Better" (I actually thought that was a promise ;) ), "Mama", "Second Home By the Freakin' Sea", "Silver Rainbow", "Job to Do". Actually, that album isn't bad. Not too crazy about Invisible Touch or We Can't Dance (although a couple nice things on each). I couldn't get into Calling All Stations even though my buddy Nick played on a few of the tunes. Actually, I don't know why they didn't use him for all of them because the other guy, Nir Z, seems more generic style-wise. Nick really has the "Phil Feel". But, who knows?

Anyway, for this tribute project I will get creative and bend time a little bit. Some covers, some new music in the style of different eras and some other twists and turns. All just for Genesis fans really... and for my own entertainment. It is partially embarassing but since I have nothing to prove to anyone I really don't care.

Nadious Sylvanicus! What's up dude? Glad you heard it. Like Nick's drums? ;) That will be out some time this year.

I think some of the same Sonik Synth 2 vintage sounds are on the 60's & 70's refill (like the Rick). I don't know if Scream quite does the trick though like the AT effects in ST. (I know it doesn't). But, it might get close!

I have to ask Bonamici if I can borrow you to sing on a tune or two (especially a cover if you'll do it). My Genesis tribute thing is more of an Alan Parsons Project kind of thing with different singers and musicians contributing (except it is not done for anything TOO serious). There's another singer working on some stuff right now named Devon. He sounds like a hybrid between Pete and Phil.

Eh... you know. I never really grew up.

Nice to see so many prog fans here at KVR! Nick DiVirgilio is one of my favorite drummers, Spock's Beard is the band that let me know that new prog does in fact exist! Squids I'm very jealous that you got to play with him!

Anyway, if any of you prog fans are interested, here's a link to two new prog tracks I've just written. the drums are programmed but will soon be replaced by a real drummer (Nick...you reading this?!)
