I wanted to get into recording some stuff outdoor but I'm not quite sure how to go about it. Basically I know very little about recording, but I want to do it well, and I'm willing to do a lot of reading up.
I don't want to go down the mini disc and mic route, I want to do it really well. Has anyone any advice/experience with this, are there certain mics that are made for doing this?

So you don't want to use mini disc which is the easist? Whith a laptop you could record at 36bit/96khz? Depends on how many mic's you want to use. Maybe a portable multitrack burner. Maybe someone else could suggest the mic's. Might need a few mic stands?

Thanks for the response, I guess a portable multitrack would be essential. I'll look into that. What I have is no clue about mics, and if anyone knows of any good resources that would be a God send. I'll keep researching into this.

Couldn't have said it better...
I use a tascam da-p1 DAT recorder and Sony ECM 999 stereo M/S microphone with good to great results, but it won't do if you want to do surround recordings. In that case you'll need a multitrack recorder and multiple microphones

What? And nobody mentioned you'd be needing a large pile of money?
My advice. Be careful of some of these cheapish new memory card based recorders.
You can't record "really well" with a minidisc? I think that depends on what accessories you buy, which microphones and whether you record in PCM mode or not. None of the microphones Sony sell for MD's are much good at all - mostly made for recording meetings/note taking. You can bypass the internal preamp to if you buy a compliant external one and use linein.
Unless you have a lot of money and don't mind having to lug a rack around I don't think there are many affordable *better than minidisc* solutions.
If you're trying to record "ambience" etc then you're probably going to need a stereo pair of condensors and something to mount them on. As Peter suggests you could go for an M/S microphone setup to.

Wow, thanks for the for the responses people, that's just the stuff I was after. Looks like there is a fair ammount of reading I'm going to have to get down to. Great stuff though, I'll check it all out then report back!
