trying to get my say in before things get extra interesting but:

I self-taught myself a bunch of theory after somebody showed me a major scale and triads, and I think it's very helpful to my creativity, except when it isn't.

My band mate never learned any theory, except what I tried to show him. I'm a terrible teacher so most of it doesn't make sense to him, but when it does make sense, it helps his creativity... except when it doesn't.

As to the-soon-to-be-all-consuming-focus of this thread, I find whyterabbyt amusing and disagreeable and very well mannered. The rest of you get 2 out of 3.

Really?

Post

.. yes!

.. music is like lego: go playing and connect and combine little tones and sounds to build something that matches.
thats the way i play piano: i put my fingers on the keys, press these keys and just listen.
and if it sounds well i´m right in the process of musicmaking.
i dont need to know what i´m doing there .. i just have to listen if i like it or not.

No, Im expressing a difference of opinion, and feel that that difference of opinion originates in the things that people are conveniently bypassing as they resort to generalisation and assumption, so Im highlighting the flaws in those statements to explain why I feel justified in believing differently.

That seems to have warranted multiple ad hominem attacks from a number of people with an investment in the thing I disagree with. Including you, now.

I'll never understand that behaviour.

('Cept for Chase, of course, he just waits till there's a big enough crowd to be 'me too' with.)

Guess I should just shut up, because you lot are all perfectly happy to have a go at those who dont agree with The One True Way. Same as usual at KVR.
I wasn't attacking you at all, just making an observation based on the tone of your posts. It's not what you're doing. It's how you're going about doing it. There's nothing wrong with discussing things if it's done in a friendly manner, but you have this defensive and arrogant "know-it-all" attitude. Of course people are going to get annoyed when you come into a thread, nit pick at other people's posts, take things out of context and look for every little thing that's wrong with them. You don't come off as any more intelligent by doing all this, you come off as insecure.

I know quite a lot of music theory, was in music school, and I don't see that it is problem for me.

I mean, some schooled architects can make great buildings, some are not creative, it depends on a person. Most of stories bashing music theory are based on examples of people that are musical, and play their instrument well, but are not creative at all. They just can't write a good song, that is somethig completely different than for instance being creative in a sense of playing good improvisation on instrument. There is a lot of different aspects of musicianship.

Knowing some rules makes it easier for certain types of personalities to make music, but some people do feel like it is tiding them down, but be sure that it is only their problem, not a problem with music theory.

I make same music like I would make without knowing theory, it is just that I work faster, it takes less time to put things I hear in my head into reality.

The "Magic formula" for me is to always hear what I like inside my head first and then use theory to channel that into music, to give it a form, and then forget about rules and judge it based on how it does makes me feel, how it sounds to me. Theory is a tool, a servant. When it becomes a master, only then it becomes a problem too.

I'm not gonna read this thread complete...I get tired of these quickly..you guys know my position...I know some theory and always willing and wanting to learn more...but I can say with all certainty that just because someone understands and can spew out music theory in forums does not mean they know how to apply it to their music...that's the key imo...:)
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

music theory is useful but it's not crucial to making great music. one's widely accepted music theory is meaningless to some. and those "uneducated" people are truly masters of their instruments and play from the heart in total harmony with each other, and without the theory. do they do well? absolutely. some do hundreds of times better than the theory sluts imo :p. would it be better with the theory on the side? of course.... it's only a plus.

Well I am glad someone noticed it!

I spent an hour of my employers time writing that!!

And I didn't even get a 'screw you!' from anyone.

And then a much hyped fight between nuffink and whyterabbyt came to naught....

What a rip off!! :tantrum:

I've just gone back and read it, very nicely put, John.

I give up on these threads generally after post #3, so I had almost missed it.
