Just saw this mentioned on Musicthing.

Reaper audio recorder, made by the Jesusonic/Winamp guy.

Free for now, and only a <1MB download. Only hosts Dx and Jesusonic effects so far, but VST is apparently planned, and no MIDI.

Check it out here.

it looks interesting for someone on a budget...

It looks pretty cool !
Kara, it's not a tracker but an audio sequencer, judging by the screenshots.
Feature list is quite impressive, and it may also be a very good audio editor !
Most important thing for me is that it is less than 1Mb, meaning that it is efficiently coded, meaning that it is efficient :)
Mos annoying thing is that midi and VSTi support is not planned ... (only VST effect mid 2006)

It's sonic foundry acid 3.0 :P Except it didn't crash..so it's obviously not a pro app :| :P

Wow looks like a free version of Vegas 1.0!

http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/index.php is also a freeware audio editor but has existing vst support. Version 2 (due 2006) will offer midi and instrument support. Its 8.5 meg on disk.I can't see the benefit of reaper?.

Kristal is not an audio editor, only a multitracker, that needs an external audio editor; the same is Reaper, so Audacity is still ahead, IMO.
Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.

I think were talking about multitrackers here, and since I don't see where Audacity supports ASIO drivers or VST without a special adapter.I only see it's advantage as an audio editor only.

From the site - January 6 2006: REAPER v0.43 is available, with a ton of fixes and improvements, including basic MIDI and VSTi support.

Now with Midi? I will have to try this out soon!

Wow, they're fast ! It was initially planned for late 2006 ?!
Good midi/vsti support => tracktion killer ? :D

You can't always get what you waaaant...

The developement roadmap seems pretty fast so far, but so are many app in the early stage; often developpement slows down as the addition of new features start to complicate things a bit though. Certainly worth checking in from time to time as I would love to have Vegas or a clone of it with full midi functionality.
