The reason we enjoy music is because that is essentially what we are made of.
Music is made of vibrations of soundwaves which we relate to because matter is
essentially a vibration of energy. When we listen to music we are merely resonating in harmony with the very building blocks that make us who we are.
Each note may represent an element and each chord could represent a compound (eg water - h20).. When musicians make music consisting of many chords and notes in an arranged sequence this could also represent (unconsciously) the many facets of what we see or experience in nature and hence gives a sense of travel or movement.
Does music reflect the origins of the Universe?
Just watched some space doco on tv called Origins or something.. They say all the different atoms in nature (or the Universe) are created when stars Die. Once Hydrogen becomes so dense the electrons mould or something to create helium, then the next element Lithium and once the pressure gets greater gets all the way up to Iron before the star eventually explodes... Then the rest of the elements are created as a result of the huge energies released in the supernova..
It's like life (especially intelligent life like us) is the most complicated thing the Universe can come up with, and all these special events over billions of years are required in order for it to happen.
But anyway, the Universe cooks the elements like a good dish of food. The food tastes good because of all the flavours. And the music we listen to sounds good to us because of all the textures/flavour/timbre changes or mixture of frequencies (and it does because we are part of the universe).. It's all about creating patterns. Making order out of the chaos.. When the Universe began it is said it was hot, chaotic, and there were not many elements. These only started to occur when the Universe settled down and spent some time to comprehend itself and it's new set of laws of physics and started to orchestrate the universe hehehe... Then it started to make order out of the chaos by creating structures like gallaxies containing billions of stars.. Maybe the universe consciously likes 'flavour' and creates the many elements on the periodic table to keep interested. f**k knows.. And I haven't even started on string theory yet..
So the Universe likes a variety of elements and many possibilities, just like we enjoy food with many flavours, just as we enjoy arrangements that are complex in melodic and timbral structures (unless you are a dumb MTV head).. I mean, have you ever thought to yourself 'why do we actually enjoy music'?? The reason I bet is universal.
Our existence proves that the universe somehow created us through all these events to try and understand itself.... maybe heh
And how is music relevant or important in the Universal scheme of things? Because it facilitates in the alteration of consciousness - kinda like drugs i guess.. Natures mood modifying device, to stir up the senses, and a way to travel metaphysically. I believe animals less intelligent react to music also. I've heard dogs howl to a piano like it's trying to improvise, and birds sing to played music.. Maybe aliens on all the different planets have a level of understanding of it like us too..

It is hard for people to talk about their spiritual side anyway, it is something very personal and vulnerable, so why coming at the thread just for the sake of being rude? So much very relevant people from scientists to famous artists often talk about spirituality in their work, someone would think that bashing spirituality in art like it is some kind of superstitious belief is behind us...
What we hold inside of us can be agressive, destructive, calm, constructive, nice ugly, whatever... Spiritual is about Quality... When someone makes music, even unintentionaly, that is moving, it can be even extremly agressive, it is spiritual in some way. On the other hand, someone can make music about god that is at the first glance nice, but it is formal, and hollow. So spiritual can be something really manly, look at the implementation of spirituality in feudal Japan and China.
Sex, body, balls they are no more or less spiritual than your inner self. Materialism is about sucking the sense of existence otu of life, and promoting shallow pleasures. There is big difference in quality between just f**king because of need and desire and having deep experience of sex.

You got it completely wrong. Some music is spiritual because it comes from deep, rich and infinite part of our being, and that can move other people on a deeper level instead of just being used for fun or as a background music. If something makes you think, feel, move but for real, if something touches strings in you that are not often touched, than it is spiritual. Spiritual is about constant search, reinventing ourselves, getting to know our innerself better and expressing it thru our work to outer world. It is not about religion, especially western concept of it. Shakti and Shiva would not fit in our wester concpet of divine.I just "discovered" Rammstein (yeah I know - but I tend to keep away from the mainstream). Listening to eg. Benzin from their latest opus is a nice comment on this thread. Music ain't 'bout the spirits. It's about balls. Sex. Body. More sex. Pure materialism. Music can displace you.

Strange thing is, while I can understand music quite well, i find it quite uninteresting to do calculations. I wasnt terribly spectacular at math at school (i was ok). Its like the subconcious part of my brain is switched on more than the concious one. I always daydream hehe
