heres an example of the distortion sound i am looking for

juts a clean sound that isn;t noisy, but you can tell its distorted yet you can hear exactly whast being played,

if its free thats a plus but i dont mind spending money if i know exactly what im getting,

also can you recommend any other plugins that are good, i have the default cubase ones, but if you could give me the best of the each catergory (freeware prefferably),

i have had alook at the roundup of free vst but its a bit overwhelming, im not looking for a massive libray of effects. just a good selection, so i would very appreciate your help in this.

With guitar sounds, you aren't really going to get them through plugins.

To get a clear but distorted sound is very tricky in a home situation, as way to do it is to have a low/medium (e.g. kind of 'bluesy crunch') pregain setting, but a very high master output level.

With high master levels you get the power amp working hard rather than the pre amp, which gives it a very different sound. This sound was used by all the 60s players as there WERE NO pre gain controls on the old Marshalls so to get distortion you had to crank them.

To try and achieve something with plugins you are going to need a guitar amp sim, and as I said; keep the pre gain low, and crank the master. Use a setting that is called something like '60s british' or plexi. Put the master all the way up, then slowly tweak the pregain.
All important is to hit your guitar HARD, with a sound like this you can go from a clean to a distorted sound just by changing how hard you attack.

You might want to try a compressor ... soft knee, low attack and release, low ratio (something like 3), then lower the threshold until it sounds about right (you'll have to raise the gain to compensate).

Of course, I might be wrong.

what plugin should i try this compressor thing with then?

even if i cant get it as good as the exmaple i gave, it would be nice to have a good distorted guitar that doesn;t sound ugly (as i write instrumentals, so a big metal overdirve wont work, but emotional dramatic ending ditortion will

)

so you see what im trying to create, ill have another look around, i got a amp sim, guitar suite its called, free one ill try that now, otherwise ill just keep downloading new one and trying then,

also if you have any other recomendations of other types of free effects let me know so i can bbuild a small but very useablt effect bank

try "guitar combos PC". you can try 3 demos that make up the combo. i tried the 'twang' one.

sorry i dont know if thats the sound you'll want as i had trouble trying to download the song, outlined above. i'm guestimating

I hope ya don't mind me chiming in, Art, but what you stated corroborates with the experiences that I have had in the HDD world, as well.

I like some of the amp sims, but I just can't match what I hear from a good ole/old Fender. When I attach my '84 Fender Champ 12 to my sound card (via headphone or line out jacks), it just plain blows the rest away. However, I'm also getting a bit of amp buzz in the mix, which can sometimes be very legitimate. It seems that no matter sim I use, it's just not as colourful. Perhaps, I'm just a bit jaded when it comes to amps?

I've noticed this a bit, but was rather put off by having to employ this method to get the right tones out. However, you're quite right- the attack(s) do, in fact, modulate the tones, as such.

again I would be interested to hear how that sounds...I have found line outs without speaker emulation to be too harsh for my tastes...however I can also see the point of not caring for amp sims...I do like POD 2.0...however I also use the sansamp gt2, I highly suggest you try one out if you haven't already...I think you'll be quite pleased with the sound and the character of the sound.

Also, about the hum, I'm just curious how close are you, with your guitar (does your G&L have humbuckers?)from your amp...small amps don't have as big a transformer as a larger tube amps, but even their transformers make noise...getting a little bit away from your amp might help...

try the Juicy 77 (Mesa/Marshall sounds, and sparkly clean tone) and TSS (tube screamer overdrive) plugins. those are free and offer incredible tone and punch. I havent heard the song you list but a slightly overdriven crunch tone sounds like what your lookin for. Give these a try. A pre-amp/DI box also helps too and is a worthy investment if you plan to do direct guitar recording.

and for $100 or less, a V-Amp 2 from Behringer offers good tone, not as pricey and doesnt breakup as much as the POD2, but worth every penny.

For crunch sounds, it can be effective to run the same recording though both a clean and driven amps (or sims) at the same time. The result demostrate that saturated break up and sustain while retaining the clean attack (and is easy to do at low volumes).

Either that or buy a Plexi

If you have a distortion, or more importantly an overdrive pedal, run those through the computer to the amp sims, which can give a raw crunchy sound. Even any cheap mic or computer mic recording one track with that and a duplicate DI track can give some hefty crunch and realism.

im looking for a certain type of distortion, i cant find it
