Hi all!

Has anyone some experience how to get a song played on some radio stations? Do you have to send directly to the sender? Or is it necessary to know some people there? Should you contact the radios DJ directly? What are the important people?

Thanx for response

Perhaps you might think about approaching some internet radio sites or something more along those lines...

artistlaunch.com has been pretty good to me in that regard.

Cheers, and good luck... Your music is very cool.

I have found 3 ways to get my stuff in the radio:

#1 Pay lots and lots of money.

#2 Pick up a radio DJ, shag their brains out and hope they appreciate your promotional efforts enough to play your stuff :hihi:

#3 Find a DJ who actually likes what you do and approach them nicely. In real life it doesn't usually happen, though. And if it does it usually leads to #2, which, in turn, if you're unlucky, then leads to #1. Life sucks.

Community radio is easy. Smoke out the DJ, or whatever bribes serve the same purpose in your society :-) Same for college radio. More organized public radio is a bit tougher, because the standards are higher and the demand greater. Independent commercial radio, if it still exists, has different criteria. And Clear Channel? You need to get it in your contract rider when you sign with your label.

Even small town college stations literally throw away tapes and CDRs by the boxload. It's essential to do some politicking, schmoozing. You've got to make more of an impression than just mailing them a press kit. You wouldn't believe how many people do that.

My limited experience includes a small town college station, a big city community station, and I once worked a political fundraiser booth at Gordon McLendon's ranch. So my opinion is worth little.

I don't know how radio works in Europe. Maybe it's a little less completely stupid.

Consider internet radio stations. You have a much easier window to climb through in that aspect (from personal experience at least).

a big thing to note if you send your cds out to university radio and small indie stations is to make sure that you send your cd in a proper jewel case that has a spine on it. why? cause if you ever go to a station they put cds in shelves like this and the dj's pull them off of the racks. many stations here in canada will toss your cd if it shows up in a thin jewel case that cant be read off of a rack. if your music is good enough they might be nice enough to make a new spine label for you but not likely.

for internet radio make sure you do a proper ID3 tagging of your music before you burn it in whatever program you use. the station managers will enter into the database, and songs not properly labelled will not be played or credited to the right person.

I would not go for commercial radio, just start by approaching your local radio stations, they usually favor their local bands and musicians to give them the chance being broadcasted and hopefully some person with the right networks and influences hears your song and may contact the local radiostation for more details.
There are always scouts from various larger record companies listening to local radio stations and attending gigs in their areas to track new talent.
This last thing will cost you your independant state as artist if you decide to get yourself contracted though.

How to get a song into radio?
A song into radio in 5 easy steps:

1ST: Open the four screws of the radio's back panel
2ND: See if CD (or other media) fits
3RD: Burn the CD
4Th: Place it carefuly inside the radio
5Th: Screw back the back panel exactly as it was

DONE.
