wow, I thought y'all were nuts as I've been working in Live5 pushing it pretty hard with no problems..as it turns out, that was with 5.01..
so I found the new version, when it opened up I clicked to open a set and everything went poof!
thank goodness I still have v5.01

Post

As a general bit of advice I always keep the download installer file for the previous version just in case (I do that with all programs, because you never know when trouble might hit, even with the best software).

I'm obviously being lucky though because I've had no problems with 5.0.1, 5.0.2, or 5.0.3 so far...

I haven't had a lick of problems with Live 5 but like bluedad I've been using 5.01. Unless there is a feature or bug fix that I really need, I usually lag behind the others in updates for just that reason.

In any case the Ableton's are stout fellows and will fix it all up nice and pretty before long.

Those that can, do. Those that can't, argue about it on k-v-r

I'm surprised that any of you are having such extreem-sounding problems, because I've not picked that up on the Ableton Forum. In the past if there have been serious problems with a realease there are angry outbursts galore on that forum

At present these are the top topics being discussed on the General Forum, copied from the forum index:

* Announcement: Camp Ableton founded in Berlin, 2005
* Sticky: Coldcut Remix Contest
* Sticky: New Artist Interviews & Movies
* Is Reaktor 5 really that CPU hungry?

All of that seems like pretty standard forum activity.

Just surprised that there isn't big outcry about Live 5.0.3 not working for people like you guys. Have you reported your problems to Ableton?

I replaced my video card and Live 5.03 works fine.

Nice one krank. I hope that the issues you are having get sorted quickly, and based on Ableton's usual track record I'm fairly confident

i did complain, but as I f**ked my xp install with xplite (uninstalled a thing or two too many) I blame it on me. as i said, I'll see after the xp reinstall.

Not sure if this is entirely on topic, but I tried the demo of Live this week, but could not for the life of me get it to do a full VST scan without crashing. Didn't even seem like it was crashing at the same points each time.

Anyone have any suggestions on getting it to scan VST folders in a slightly more graceful manner?

Post

I have never had it crash in the VST folder unless there was a VST in there it didn't agree with. Like the demo of superwave synths. The full version of superwave's synth work perfectly.

Maybe you should post at the abe's forum.

Yes, same here. There is a thread on the Abes forum where incompatible VSTs are listed, so check if there are any in your folder that match the list.

I think I know one of the problems then: VSTs with pop-up screens on boot. I did notice one with a pop-screen freezing the process. VAZ modular seemed to freeze it on scan, too. My biggest gripe is that the scan seemed to start from the beginning each time, rather than picking up where it left off. Tracktion v1.6 has that same kind of slow, activate-each-plugin scan that crashes often, but at least it seems to build a cache, so skips the crasher.

I thought about posting at their forum, but since I was just trying the demo, it seemed like a lot of hassle to go through just to try it out, before I decide I'm even interested in it. I'll have to check their forums a bit, I guess.

I think you are on to something with the pop up window vsts cause problems with Live. That may be helpful for the Abes to know that.

I understand, I get discouraged when something doesn't work right and I'm not sure if I even like it anyway.

I'm using 5.0.2 still and up until recently didn't have any problems.

Suddenly, one or 2 plugins I'd been using in a song decided they weren't compatible with Live anymore--when loading the .als I'd get a small pop-up error window. Oddly, the plugin in question was inserted on several tracks and was working on all but one of them if that makes any sense. I deleted the non-working instance, saved the als, then rescanned the vst folder and rebooted.

Seems to be working fine again.

I was using SampleTank 2.1 with 8 channels of sounds and midi tracks in Live 5.03 and it would crackle, so I used Project 5v2 for the same song....no crackle. I added another Gig of RAM last night for a total of 2GB, and now Live 5.03 doesn't crackle.

In the task manager it showed that the host and VST were using up 700MB of ram while running.

Anyway...I'm just sharing my experience..take what you want from it.
Riley :ud: if anything.
