I have three pair...the cheapest were 70 bux....don't ask about the dt770's...but I got monitors too...and my sound card is digitally connected to my entertainment system....

I've considered this topic off and on for a few years.
I have no choice. I have to mix on 'headphones' (actually closer to the bonephones)but anyone listening to music 'on-th-job' will use headphones pretty exclusively. Drivers either listen to headphones or the standard head-busting sub-bass wonder machines. (my observations in my part of the world).
But a good mix on speakers sounds great in headphones. To bad the opposite definately isn't true.

I mean when you mix something, you already want a decent balance, so hopefully it sounds fine in any and everything. When you start tinkering with things to fit best in one kind of unit, then it'll be mucked up in another, supposedly. Is the typical Joe gonna piss about how something is mixed, assuming it's given a semblance of attention in the first place? I don't think I've ever heard one complaint about a good, or less than spectacular mix from somebody other than those that produce or record. That's a pretty low percentage of people in the scheme of things.

Sounding good, and nit picking over a production's mix that most people wouldn't think about are two seperate things I think. Again though, if it's your life's work, and demanded of you, then do your thing.

This is just an opinion by someone who is pretty tired at the moment, so for what it's worth...

I mostly use headphones when I'm writing stuff so I don't disturb my family with whatever screechy bassline I haven't fixed yet, but I've got some great speakers to test mixes on when I'm finishing the mix. If I don't test it on anything but headphones I usually end up with an excessively bass-heavy track - I read somewhere it's to do with headphones needing to put a lot more energy into reproducing bass than conventional speakers so you overcompensate, or something like that

Well i use headphones mainly at night (being a student i dont sleep at night :S

) as i dont want to disturb anyone else at 3:00am in the morning. I dont own an ipod or mp3 player, so i always listen to my music through my "monitors".

But no i dont believe we are becomming a headphone society. Sure every1 uses them with thier ipods and such when they are alone, but mp3 players have given us a great ability to share music wherever we are. For example in my school sixth form centre we always have an ipod or mp3 connected to a set of speakers, and lots of people share music like that. Its just plug in and play!

3 interesting things i heard about this year:

1. a MIT professor is designing a device that beams sound into a laser-like path. two people can stand next to each other, one person will hear a wall of sound and the other person wont hear a thing. perfect for music schools, large studios etc., but most importantly it will have military uses

2. there are raves where everyone has an ipod and i have no clue how they do this but they somehow tune into a playlist the dj is spinning. perfect for raves that have noise limits but just plain freaky.

3. i read in Future Music US about an up-and-coming dj who uses noise-cancelling headphones to work on mixes for live sets on the airplane to his next stops. not that special but kind of interesting to think about using noise-cancelling cans in the future.

2) Do those things really happen? I've never heard of this outside of an old phillips commercial. I Think it would defeat half the purpose of going to a concert

3) A lot of DJ's use noise cancelling headphones for live use as it is better than just cranking the volume up on regular phones to overcome the loud music around you.

are we becoming a headphone society?
