Intrument Placement Question

When mixing, do you normally effectuate/process an event and then place it?...or do you place it then process? I'm just after the general opinion once again, so any contributions would be well appreciated. CHEERS!

Well, I haven't a clue how the pros do it, but I always try to put the same sorta instruments in roughly the same place in the pan-mix, so that's rarely an issue for me. Drums - spread out like you're supposed to (although I admit to a fondness for reeeeally panning the toms), bass and lead vox dead center, keys and pads on either side, guitars closer to the center, unless it's really crowded. I do try to record in mono whenever I can, so I'll add effects as I mix them in - sometimes difficult to do effectively with stereo tracks.
Anyway, I pan the parts as I record them, then add effects afterwards. I think that's how you do it. You can always spread the signal out with a good reverb, too, if you need to.
