Ozone is a great mastering tool. I think that Voxengo and Kjaerhus make equally good alternatives as well. And as has been said before, STOP SQUASHING THE LIFE OUT OF YER AUDIO!!!

I've been using W1 (free, even!) for pretty much anything (and yes, it can get pretty damn loud). I haven't really heard coloration, but then again my ears suck.

However, it seems to me that the coloration from the limiter depends entirely on the threshold and the attack/release settings (if any exist), in combination with the signal. So pure white noise wont have coloration but if you have a trance pad with two detuned saws at different octaves, you're gonna have "coloration" becuase the one thats slightly louder will duck the other one out just a bit, causing a decrease in the loudness of the base frequency of the second one, as well as in its harmonics ...

Last time when I was searching for compressors to solve some dynamic problems with acoustic guitar arpeggios I ended up renting DBX 160 and all problems were solved instantly. All compressor plugins that I tried made me feel like I had some sand on my teeth. DBX made me feel like I had this gtr track right inside my head. With limiters things are much better but not what I was looking for so last weekend I rented Manley lab SLAM and it did the trick. The audio spectrum was also modified but in all the right places. Sound great and very, very loud! The track in question was a club remix for a well known French singer so keeping dynamics was not the objective.

Aleksey, could you please suggest a preset or settings for Soniformer that can flatten out some of the mids (400/300hz)/lower mids (200hz)and boost a bit of 1kHz and 3-4kHz? I’m used to those “One-BIG-KNOB” boxes so I need to invest a lot more time into your plugins before I can figure out if they can be useful for me or not.

Thanks.

Don't forget about TLs Pocket Limiter...

DannyZ, please use the latest v2.4.1 with this preset: http://www.voxengo.com/temp/MakingLoudLouder.fxp (it's in the temp folder - will be removed from download later).

You'll probably need to adjust threshold to suit your material.

(BTW, I've made this preset in 15 seconds - it worked fine at bringing more apparent loudness on a track I've used it for). I mean, if it works for your track well too, using Soniformer may be faster than dialing in an one-knob device.

This, by the way, is really good and pretty simple limiter.

A great way to START!
