Hi forum.
Is there a free program available to convert WAV samples into SF2 format?
Thanks in advance.

You can't just convert from wav files to Soundfont, you need a Soundfont editor to build the instrument. There's a free one called Viena at www.synthfont.com .

This is not free - but- may be an easier more complete option for constructing sound fonts – plus a few other types too.

The best tool IMO is Vienna 2.3 free from Creative Labs. The only catch is you need one of their soundcards installed to use it. Awave is also very useful and I think there is a free demo to try. It works with any soundcard and can convert between several sample formats. It is not as easy to use for making soundfonts from wavs, tho, in my experience.

There is another like this by SoundFaction called Alive (shareware)bro. miles wrote: The best tool IMO is Vienna 2.3 free from Creative Labs. The only catch is you need one of their soundcards installed to use it.
Its ok once you have the waves and ready to go – it’s a good starting program and as time goes on and the limitations worked out, other tools can be introduced to cover its weaknesses (namely looping and wave editing) but unless someone is really keen, they are unlikely to need anything else.bro. miles wrote: Awave is also very useful and I think there is a free demo to try. I personally do all my wave editing at the highest sample rate and bit depth, then covert to the appropriate bit depth, add my loop points (if needed) and bring those edited waves into Awave for compiling into a sound font. Other programs I use for editing waves – Zero-X seamless looper, Zero-X BeatCreator and Sony SoundForge.

Maybe it's just me, but I found the free program Viena (one n) to be unworkable - meaning the program just didn't work. Seemed to be still in the alpha stages IMO.

I liked Vienna once I got used to it. Creative asked me if I would evaluate their product for input into a new Vienna (which I don't think saw the light of day, yet), and it was funny - every complaint I had about it, it already did. I suppose it's just not an "inviting" program.
(There are some real yuuchy things about Vienna, though, still, I think it's better then what peope give it credit for.)
This is not a free solution (and thus off-topic) but in Translator, there is a new Script Mapper feature where you can map things using a text file or a spreadsheet. This makes mapping .wav files to a SoundFont very easy.
For example, here is an example script:
36, 44, 0, 63, C2, brass1.wav
36, 44, 64, 127, C2, brass2.wav
45, 50, 0, 63, C3, brass3.wav
45, 50, 64, 127, C3, brass4.wav
The fields are user-definable; in this case it's
LoKey, HiKey, LoVel, HiVel, RootKey, FileName
This would create a two keyrange, two velrange SoundFont.
You can also put in any parameter you want; attack, decay, release, filter, etc. and it will be written into the file. You can set parameters up in global ways, as well in each individual field. In development is a Script Writer interface where graphical elements help you compose the file. This way the two input paradigms are supported - manual/auto typing, or visual graphical editing.
For specific Script Mapper info, see http://www.chickensys.com/support/softw ... apper.html
For specific Translator info, see www.chickensys.com/translator
The Script Mapper is due to show up in some other upcoming products.
Again, this isn't a free thing, but the programmers have to eat somehow. =)
