I, too, prefer 1; it has more beef and tone. 2 seems more distorted, but it's so scooped that it doesn't feel as heavy; it feels even more modern (i.e., tamed, thin, and overcompressed). But both are more similar than different in that the amount of distortion far outweighs the individual tone of the guitar. I like the riff, though.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

I think they both sound good. Although, I think that #2 will fit better in a full mix. That riff does indeed kick ass.

...its still cool. :p
so, what sort of advice are you looking for? Are these two clips different amp sims, or settings, and what context are you looking to use the sound in?
Or are they just two different sounds you want to try to replicate?

Those guys have a very Meshuggah-esque (circa Destroy / Erase / Improve) sound which is cool...but damn, that mp3 on their site is very...VERY fatiguing to listen to.

They are my settings.
Which is heavier, but in a tube sense, not solid state.
Which sounds less like an amp sim?
Which, do you think, sounds more like Machine Head, Nevermore etc... ?

I agree.
They use POD, I believe, and it sounds like it.

Ah, then I would have to say #1, but you may need to play it in context with drums bass and a good scream to make sure it doesnt have too much top and bottom on it.
#2 has a more jagged / harsh tone to it.
Now I am intrigued... I too would like to know what you are using.

It has a lot of air, and sounds a lot like my sans-Amp GT2, but since this is a software forum, I would maybe guess Amplitube and some serious EQ...?
