half and half.
i use my computer to sequence and kontakt as my sampler, plus some other random vst's but i use my juno 106 for most of my synth stuff, mostly basses to be honest and then a bunch of hardware effects. i still ove the feel of actual gear although i do see the benefits of usings plug ins these days as well. specially when t come to samplers.

I used to be a hardcore hardware junky, but after playing with Ravity and my Proteus, I'm starting to dig this software thing. Software is a lot easier to use. Too bad it's so CPU intensive.
Interestingly, running tests using 3-4 instances of Ravity S (demo version) at once with effects, my CPU gauge didn't even hit 20%.
All of my sound comes from software these days. My Roland just acts as a MIDI controller now.

2 computers and 8 freaking guitars and a mandolin.
I'm gonna hang the dam guitars on the wall soon tho
this is, after all, only a hobby for me. It shouldn't be a place to trip. (over guitars)
VSTi's rule! (or is that...ROCK!) (or maybe it's: VSTi's and computer sequencers are the cat's pajamas)
I've owned hardware in the past.
now I don't

the ease of use and total recall of software make hardware a no-go to me, except for guitar. VST is something I have waited a long, long time for, I knew puters were the thing for me. I'd like to replace my amp with software - I'll prolly get Komplete4 next year (I don't have Guitar Rig yet).
If only MIDI guitars were able to sound like real ones, I'd get rid of the guitar too. As it stands however, I'll prolly get myself a bass guitar next
OTOH, I don't want to buy a synth. Except maybe a synth like the Access Virus Total Integration, if it does what it says. But it would have to be something special, the hardware should do stuff software can't - like motorised faders... I of course love my Korg MS20 controller

It used to be that software was just a toy, but now software (Ravity, Proteus/Emulator X, tons of other VA synths, Kontakt, etc.) can easily rival hardware, and in many cases leave hardware in the dust. Plus it's always going to be cheaper!

I know of no professional composers who don't use a computer in some way or another. A fully integrated software based production system is another thing altogether, but I am convinced that is the future. I think that most people who use the computers and software are performers, not composers, and have an entirely different take on what is going on and here is hugh devide between these two groups, ery similar to divide on film making in the early days, where one group based filmed stage plays and the other who realized the potential of the new medium to stretch the bounds.

Never owned any hardware. Started all software. In the last year, bought an ESQ-1 as a midi controller. Like the sounds' no more hardware for now. (monitors first).
Of course I'm cheap about software, too.

Well I started on Hardware with a Fostex 4 track tape player and a Korg M-1.
With the advent of modern PCs capable of 3 to 4ghz speeds we now have PCs that can and do outperform any hardware on the market.
It boils down to convience I can have a harware instrument like Receptor for instance and carry hundreds of synths <vsts> within it.
Compare that to luggin around a B3 or Korg T1 and youll see theres no comparison.
I own one of the cleanest and best sounding keyboards on the planet a Kurzwiel and let me tell you its a bitch luggin that thing around.
You want to see how far software has come then do a A/B comparison to lets say the old Yamaha DX7 then try the Native instruments FM-7. Or even try Autura Moog compared to the real moog, or try the Korg Wavestation to the software counterpart and youll see why alot of ppl love plugs.
And btw in case you didnt know all modern synths all have tiny computer boards inside of them and todays computer is powerful enough to handle almost any thing hardware can do.
Unless you play a steinway or les paul or strat or pearl drums or marshall tube amps, its all digital and its all computers hardware is dead long live Plugs and RECEPTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and speaking of sequencers I can tackle jobs with Sonar 5 that it would take several Neve boards to do in less the time & effort to, and get this no having to pay that electric bill to fire up the Neve board agian oh no im putting all the money im saving into more plugins and software stuff or im gonna make a monster DAW i think a 5ghz monster lol just gotta wait till they release the chip from AMD later this year.

indeed. Me and my toys have full reign over the basement - only place in the house that the children haven't completely taken over.dunder wrote:and that spare bedroom/basement/diningroom/addition/building helps...Muff Wiggler wrote:i'm going from all software to mostly hardware!

Hardware makes it easier to integrate my kids into the signal processing chain, which they appreciate.
