How many operators do you use? I think the hardest part would be having numerous operators and trying to figure out how each one would effect the next in the signal flow. I myself have a lot of fun with just a 2 operator, I get all sorts of crazy sounds.

But it's like practicing an instrument, innit. Practicing scales, arpeggios, technical studies and so forth - finding out what you can get out of your tools - can be a seperate activity to using what you already know creatively.james0tucson wrote: Yeah, I'd like to get my brain around FM, but at the same time, I really want to work in a mode where my creativity drives the way I use my tools, as opposed to my tools driving my creativity. One person in the BBC Radiophonic documentary had a very good way of expressing this idea.
For my part, the biggest turn-off in an FM synth (particularly the free SE ones I tend to mess around with) isn't ADSR envelopes but linear-only envelopes.

Wish someone would make a VSTi like this - I suppose Octopus comes closest but I'd like a pure FM without the wave import but with the Formant synthesis capabilities of the FS1R. Even better if it could import patches (like FM7 does) I was a little dissapointed with Octopus.nuffink wrote:You should meet it's uncle FS1R.Equilibrium wrote:I believe that the FM7 is just about the most powerful synth you can buy, and what's best of all is that now I know that I can program it with confidence.
