As a bit of informal research, I wondered if I could please solicit some opinions on the viability of a web package I'm considering working on which would be like a cross between a blog and MP3 hosting.

I have a number of custom components written which when combined together serve as a kind of publishing system which would allow musicians to post in "blog" style along with their MP3s and/or artwork.

I am thinking such a package would include domain name and hosting, and some degree of pre-customisation to suit needs. I will be honest and say I have not considered how much it would cost, and I haven't finalised anything, as I wanted to see what kind of responses and ideas are forthcoming from here.

Do you blog?

Does your blog allow you to easily add MP3s and images? If so does it fit what you need in terms of the "look" of it?

Do you use something else (like AudioShots or the Wusik label) which serves this purpose for you?

Is it just not something you'd use?

Any thoughts at all would be welcomed, before I even consider investing too much time in it.

Thanks in advance! :D

Check out myspace.com. You are limited to 4 songs. There is a blogging tool and networking stuff. So far I have just used it to post my songs and check out others. Check out my sig to see my myspace.

tk421, thanks for the reply. Yes, I know about myspace and I know a lot of people who really hate it (the ads, the joins and the nonsense) and I personally find it to be very buggy indeed. What I have in mind, is something more intended for the person intending to have their "ownspace.com" :D

Rob, thanks also for the comments! Yes, there are certainly alternatives and I'll have to bear them in mind when considering how much time to devote to this.

A selling point will be that what I intend would be on a person's own domain name.

Anyway, thank you both for the replies... I'll do some more thinking in light of them :)

Blogging is also simple content publishing for the uninitiated. If you'd like to post news, MP3s or images on your web site, but don't do HTML, blogging is one way of doing it.

i prefer to code my own webpage. i like it simple and boring, and updated about once every 12 months :hihi:

having said that about em411 an all in one locally-installed package would be cool ...

... in the software pack that came with my new nokia phone theres something the call lifeblog which syncs to your phone and grabs all your SMS / MMS messages and any photos you take and automatically compiles them into a local 'blog' which you can choose to upload to your webspace ... an audio equivalent (that picks up any new audio you created that day ... allows you to select the relevant bits / annotate it / add images / etc ... and uploads to your site) could be quite cool actually ...

I knew a Joe Bloggs once...

But seriously- Blog is short for weblog. A weblog is a journal (or newsletter) that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or the Web site.

Sounds like a web page to me...

It may be disliked by some, but it's free and you can force it to do your will carrying additional audio and video file links with html. Using archive.org as a server for said media files such an enhanced myspace page costs nil. Pause for thought about perceived value.
