Well, I came home from work today and found my computer had blue screened. I got some UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME message and found out the hard drive had gone dead. It had major errors in the first 2/3rds of its sectors. This is a temporary machine, so I didn't have all my work on it, but I did lose 2 or 3 pieces I'd been working on recently. I completely forgot to backup any of it.

Its possible once I get the new drive I ordered, I'll be able to recover the .flp files. I was just surprised how hard it hit me, once I realised I could lose them.

Let me hear some real horror stories of forgetting to back up important data, be it songs, samples, source code or taxes.

I think it'll be fun to get drunk on a friday night and complain about that.

Funny, I was just about to back up right now. So I took my DVD RW and wanted to do the procedure I always do; erase them fully, then write new data on it.

Now I have 6 DVD RW's that can be read, and 3 that can't be read. So much for the reliability of that medium

So I'll be backing up to DVD R's in a while.

BTW, I also happen to have backup's on a second harddrive so it's nothing lost yet.
In the past I seem to have lost small amounts of data. Nothing special though...
I've been on a ghost plus manual backup system ever since.

I use acid and it has an autosave function. The thing is, you never know when it's gonna kick in and at times if you're doing something particularly heavy on the processor, the autosave function (when it does kick in) crashes it or freezes it. So that had to be turned off.

Sometimes SE made synths just blow it up altogether, so what i tend to do is press the save button before every major change/addition. The annoying thing about that is it doesn't save your undo history (does anything?) So if you do get a crash, and you want to step back from your last save, it's a kick in the balls to do so.

I chose the last option, no tbecause I'm lucky but because I really don't care that much and I really don't see it as much of a problem. I'm more worried abou tlosing my CD collection in a fire which is to say I'm not worried at all.

Well...if you put it that way and compare it to "real life" events then it's completely insignficant. Unless of course ones creativity only has a 5 minute window per year, then it would suck ratballs.

Had one HD crash that relieved me of all my early digital material.

I've lost a project every now and then right in the middle of a session, but once I boot it all up again I'm usually able to recreate everything I was doing from memory and much quicker the second time. It even sometimes turns out better.

The biggest drag is the loss of time. With the last disaster I turned on Autosave in my host.

Every 4-6 months I do a backup of my entire project drive, but I have yet to need it (Knock on wood)

one summer i took off and our city(and many others) suffered a horrible blackout known as the Eastern Seaboard Blackout or something like that. well anyways my computer was plugged in and "brown" power shot back up through the power cable and zapped my main drive. it was nothing short of depressing!

Btw cyberpink, what is wrong with your keyboard. I recall you saying somewhere, but i can't recall what. It may be a simple problem to fix, and putting that together with your HD borking up....
