Best in what sense?

The most accurate are definitely Simulanalog's JCM900 and Rednef Twin. I haven't used a Saro preamp and I don't know what Juicy77 is modeled after, but Antti's Saro and BTE's Juicy77 feel extremely real.

Best sound? Simulanalog's JCM900 and Rednef Twin, again, as well as BTE's Juicy77 and Voxengo's Boogex.

Most flexibility? JCM900. It can sound soft, warm, and clean, or delightfully sharp, edgy, and distorted. And all the shades in between. Juicy 77 and Boogex are also worthy, just not as flexible.

Most responsive? JCM900 and possibly Rednef Twin.

Most tweakable? Boogex. Absolutely. Nothing else comes close. Juicy77 is worthy, but a distant second.

Lightest on resources? Boogex or the Simulanalog. Juicy77 isn't even remotely in this category.

Most ballsy? Juicy77. JCM900 is second.

Most boutique? Juicy77. No question. It sounds very, very upscale. Classy as all hell.

Most all-around useful? JCM900. Absolutely.

They all have limitations, but there is stuff you can use.

For me, Boogex isn't terribly useful as an amp sim, but its _very_ useful as a cab sim and ampsim-friendly EQ. I've also used the distortion component of it sparingly to add a little extra grit to another sim.

The JCM900 sim is pretty good, but I've kinda gotten to where I don't use it too much. The rednef twin sim is reasonable too.

I like Juicy77 (clean or dirty), though it eats a lot of CPU time. It has a bypassable cabinet sim, which is cool because that means you can combine it with cabinet impulses from Boogex and get even more sounds- though it has several cabinet models in it already.

There are plenty of others, but these are the ones I'm enjoing at the moment (after trying every one I can find, including commercial demos of stuff like GR2 which is just garbage to my ears)

Keep in mind that by putting an EQ in front of and after the plugins, you increase the range of sounds you can get dramatically.

Its also worth mentioning that if you're recording under headphones, the phones are very important. Bright sounding consumer headphones seem to make every amp sim overly harsh on its own (where it might blend better after subsequent EQ, mixing, compression, etc...

I should also mention that I've built lots and lots of the preamp that Saro emulates- I haven't really been able to use it much for direct recording, but I had a chance to use it and Juicy 77 with their cabinet sims disabled direct to a poweramp and my guitar cabinet- both sounded somewhat realistic, though they lacked a certain "liveliness" that amps I built usually have. This is not at all uncommon for modelling amps, so I'm not surprised.
