I know I almost never do, but today is special (in the worst sense).

My main projects drive, a 250 GB WD Caviar, died last night at 3:00 a.m. Click of Death, fast, slow, one clicks, two clicks, no sound at all. Tried everything. It never came back. It's gone.

I hadn't backed anything up in three weeks.

I can think of four, maybe five pieces of music I really wish I could have back, but that will probably never be.

if it is worth it, there are a few services that will retrieve as much information as possible from a fuxxor'd drive, as well as expensive recovery software out there.

My stupid fault for backing up, and yours also. A lesson for all of us!

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear it, I know how it feels. At least this is an opportunity for you to take what you remember of the pieces and re-do them, and who knows, they could be better next time.

Yea, it's totally gone in the h/w sense, though, so it would probably have to be disassembled and a fixed would be attempted, but not necessarily succeed, and probably cost an arm and a leg. I can't really justify the expense since only three or four things on there since the last backup were what I would call high quality, and even of those I can't be totally sure since I only have a sketchey memory of them. There was a lot of new stuff on there, though, so I'm pissed it's all drifting skyward like a puff od smoke.

I'll probabaly just toss it. Sad, but I've been on an inexplicably lazy streak since X-mas, so I'm lucky I didn't go two more months without burning optical b/u and then have the WD crash and burn.

I'll be building a new PC by this summer, and it will have a couple redundant HD's. I've been condsidering it, but now it will be for sure. I'll probably have two main project drives, and a backup drive for each, to keep from having to burn endless DVD's, since I track and render at 24/96.

Wow, two years without any backups? I feel for you, but, OTH...two years?!?

As to your last point, I think there is only one piece that is just lingering out of "earshot" in my mind that I might do some strange and embarrassing things in order to get back. As I recall, it was quite nice. Maybe one day when I'm rich I'll have the drive looked at to get that one thing back, but I most likely won't lay out the cash any time soon.

I'm sure the drive is under warranty, I'm hoping you mean you'll just toss the lost data and send the drive to WD for warranty replacement.

hard lesson man, but dont f**king trust harddrives or dvdrs. Back anything important to atleast 3 sources i reckon!

I've been backing up to DVD-R's exclusively for about a year now -- usually multiple copies for "archiving" when a project if finished -- is that a bad idea?

I just do it that way because it's easy, but I assumed it was as "safe" as anything else out there?

It scares me to DEATH to think of "losing" stuff, honestly... So any tips you guys have on backing up and archiving, I'd be TOTALLY glad to hear them...

Uh - sorry to hear that. Been there as well. Nasty, to say the least, you just feel like taking out your chainsaw and sending them HDD manufactures to hell.

Anyways, if you plan to build a new machine, you should probably consider arranging some RAID setup, automatically mirroring your most important drive. Shouldn't be too much of an expense as drives are freaking cheap. And you won't have to care about things manually.

PS: I haven't backed anything up in 10 years, i've never had a problem
