I just don't get the appreciation for Tube Baby. What am I missing to make it sound good?

I haven't been able to make it sound great, either. It'd be a neat one to try out for "unorthodox" sounds, though!

Tube Baby sounds too filtered for my tastes. but it'd probably work well in some mixes.

Boogex is IMHO THE BEST, with the JCM900 following close second.

dirthead does sound like it could be very promising. I would like to be disable the cab sim. :)
