Just curious, what would you say is a typical BPM for a typical genre? (Rap, Techno, Trance, Breaks etc etc)

any 'experts' care to share some info?

Trance is generally in the 130-160bpm range. DnB is usually about 160-190bpm. Other genres are far ranging ... things like Rock range from anywhere between 80 to 160bpm. I wouldn't know about Rap since I neither make it nor listen to it.

I don't know, so I can't really help, but I remember a few years ago seeing a web page that had that kind of information. Maybe trying googling a bit to see if you strike upon it?

House started at 120 bpm and below. This was pushed toward 130 for techno, and then faster still for tarnce as the white boys attempted to kick the last remaining trace of groove out of it.
Jungle and early d'n b were all at about 160 but with a half time feel that had people languidly grooving along. Then the white boys decided that running on the spot at 160bpm was a laff and you know the rest.

I also want to know about these things. I really need to make my music as generic as possible, suck the last little bit of good out of it, have the music conform.

Let's add genre specific key changes and scales here while we're at it. Oh and genre specific sampling sources. You know you're only really supposed sample movies and old funk, right?

oh and drum'n'bass died a slow and painful death at the turn of the century. let it rest in peace. it's slowly turning into the most repetitive drum'n'bass-tarnce hybrid for people on speed/E that I would say is an abomination on the face of the lord to quote someone wiser than me.

DnB singles are typically 174-180, but live shit is a bit faster, probably 178-186ish

Rap/rnb as the genres are from 60-130, but rapping as the vocal style exists in all tempos. Hip hop is within the same ranges, but averages a bit faster.

i would say trance is from 130-150. anyhting faster starts to turn into hardcore.

i just like experimenting and stuff, sometimes its fun to make a generic beat, then mess with it to fit other genres, so its handy to know the starting point.
